No iPad iBooks for the UK

ebReg Hardware has spotted the smallprint on the US iPad page which includes the term “iBooks available in the US only”. Also, there is no mention of iBooks on the UK page which is a bit of a worry. I know I bang on about geographic restrictions a lot, but this is getting beyond a joke. It is reaching the point that anyone outside the US will be close to excluded from the eBook market and that is a real shame. Almost all of the books are in English- it’s our language for God’s sake. Give us some eBooks to read in it!

Isn’t iBooks just the shop? Maybe we can at least read non drm ebooks? I can dream….

Is there not a Kindle/Amazon app for the iPhone/iPod…or is that just US only too

  3. Alloafan says:

There IS a Kindle app for the iPhone/iPod Touch – I just downloaded it, found a cheap book I’d like to read…and just bought it. It’s now sitting on my iPod Touch, waiting for me to read it, all done in less than a minute.

I paid $2.35 for the book, btw. The price of the paperback on UK Amazon is £8.99.

I just checked out the Kindle app too (if you want to try it for free then look for “twenty thousand leagues under the sea” which is currently at $0). Very slick I must say. I don’t know how it would look scaled up on the iPad but I’m certainly impressed on the iPhone.

  5. lazyboy says:

If Amazon has any sense, they’ll optimize their app for the iPad, too. I was tempted to buy a Kindle at Christmas, but I’m glad I didn’t go for it.

  6. Shaun says:

Just checked it out myself- The Lost Symbol appears as an example and I am presuming I can purchase it. This could be great for UK eBook readers. The fact that it goes to the US store though might cause a problem- how could Amazon sell a book and not eReader?

  7. lazyboy says:

I think with the Kindle and iPad, book publishers are only just beginning to realize the potential of ebooks. It might take a while for all the rights isssues and piracy concerns to be settled, but, in the meantime, it’s a pain in the butt if you live outside the US.

There is an international edition of the Kindle device – perhaps Amazon has managed to forge some deals regarding content, too.

I’m currently using a Sony PRS-505 for books, and will keep on using it even if i get a ipad. But surely must be a way to get the books i have for the 505 to the ipad? I can put my non-itune bought music to ipod/iphone, so will it be the same for books? Anyone know?

  9. Philippa says:

You can buy the kindle via the US website, apparently it works quite well over here. It does come with US plug though!

  10. Niall says:

eReader is also available for the iPhone, and they have a great range of books available. I’m in Australia and some books are not available.

I also agree that e-book restriction is stupid. There are quite a few book in my local bookstore that I am not able to purchase in eReader because of the restrictions.

  11. Shaun says:

Don’t get me started on eReader. Why does the site show me all books and not let me buy half of them? Why do they never answer my support questions? They have gone downhill badly in the last year.

I use stanza on the iPhone and whilst not a huge ebook reader I have plenty on stanza to read. My preference is for audible and audio books whilst driving.

On the Spanish iTune store you can’t even get films, let alone books!

I am interested to see what happens with the apple ibooks store vs Amazon and a kindle app optimised on the ipad.. If they stay true to form I imagine they won’t allow an optimised ipad version on kindle if it it causes competition for their own ibooks store (though they may have to publicity wise due to the iphone version)..

I know MS has signed an agreement for a kindle app on windows 7 tablets like the HP slate.. Hopefully it comes to Android tablets too..

eReader is a product I refuse to have anything to do with anymore Shaun..

  15. Philippa says:

By the way, you can buy The Lost Symbol in epub format from Waterstones.co.uk should you wish to. However, reading it seems to be limited to various ereader devices and Adobes desktop software. I guess the point is that there is a UK agreement for some books.

Same here. I have a (US model) iPad on order but live in UK, and I’m concerned about what I will or won’t get where iBooks is concerned. I can live without the store for a few months, as long as I get the reader and the ability to read the ebooks I already own on it. But somehow I doubt this will be possible, at least using the iBooks reader. Sounds like I will have to use EReader app or Kindle app.
