Finding videos to play on your BlackBerry
My experience with BlackBerry video playback has been poor so far. I tend to find that the sound rarely matches the pictures, but BBGeeks has posted a useful editorial entitled Finding videos to play on your BlackBerry which may offer some new avenues to explore.
“Chances are, if you’re looking for BlackBerry-ready videos, you want the real thing. That means popular TV shows and movies. Unfortunately, sites that contain these files aren’t so common, and the ones that are come with certain caveats. Even so, there are user-created video sites which you might find just as amusing. None have quite the library depth of YouTube, but they’re BlackBerry-ready nonetheless.”

Nokia E72 vs E71 Review – 7 Things I Love
The Nokia E72 v E72 comparison is continuing at Symbian Guru and the story is unfolding nicely (both are great phones in my opinion)- “Although my first impressions of the Nokia E72 weren’t highly positive, as I found it to be disturbingly similar to my trusty E71, it started growing on me after a while. After using the E72 as my daily phone for over a month now, I can clearly see which improvements have been made that really and positively impacted my usage pattern.”

Astraware is back as Astraware
I heard about this a while back, but it is great to see the news now confirmed. Looking forward to dealing with Horward, David and Alison more regularly again- they are not like normal business people i.e. they have personalities…
KANSAS CITY, MO and LONDON, UK - (January 27, 2010) – Handmark®, the world’s leading developer and distributor of mobile applications and services, today announced it has spun off its mobile games studio, Astraware, as the company streamlines its business to focus on other strategic areas of mobile development and support.
Astraware returns to the management of Howard Tomlinson and David Oakley, two of the original founders, and will remain a Handmark preferred partner. Handmark will continue to support Astraware on a variety of distribution and promotional opportunities.
“We saw a great opportunity to join forces with Astraware to help create and extend a collection of fun, well-designed mobile games titles to a new audience, and we did just that,” said Paul Reddick, Handmark CEO. “I still see a great opportunity for their team to continue proving their leadership as a major player in mobile games and we will continue to work alongside them.”
Handmark acquired Astraware in January 2008. Together the companies have launched more than 20 games, including the popular GTS World Racing and Platypus for iPhone, as well as its multi award-winning Astraware Sudoku for BlackBerry smartphones.
“Handmark has always been and will continue to be a trusted partner,” said Howard Tomlinson, Astraware CEO. “We look forward to continuing to deliver the very best in mobile games, focusing on the core of our business which is making your mobile experience fun and exciting across new platforms and technologies!”
This follows a recent announcement in which Handmark publicized its aggressive plans to take more than 500 publishers mobile in 2010. The company is refining its focus to lead the rapidly growing mobile publishing market, as the only partner to offer a full-service mobile solution for newspapers, magazines and other content providers.
The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The iPad
So, the iPad became reality today and turned out to be a big iPod Touch. There will be 3G/Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only models available from $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only to $829 for the 64GB 3G/Wi-Fi model. There is no carrier exclusivity, but there will be data bundles available from the likes of AT&T at launch. The Wi-Fi only model will arrive in March and the dual model in April.
It will be able to run all iPhone apps and will come with a new software title called iBook (just to confude everyone) which offers Kindle style eBook downloading at similar prices. Data entry will be via an onscreen QWERTY keyboard (shame) and that’s about it. After all of the hype it is a big iPod Touch with eBooks.
I have little doubt that it will be wonderful to use and will take eBook reading to a much bigger audience than before, but stuck between an iPhone and an iMac it may struggle to find the customary number of consumers Apple has been used to lately. On a personal note, besides offering me a better video, eBook and gaming experience I can see little here that my iPhone cannot already do in a form factor which is much more practical and portable.
This could change the eBook industry, but it won’t change much else and I am surprised at the lack of forward movement shown by the iPad. How about you?
UPDATE: I am having second thoughts about the iPad. Something is tingling in the back of my head which is telling me that it is taking all of the goodness from the iPhone and bringing it to life in a factor that makes everything you do with the iPhone better than before. Sharing documents, viewing photos, playing games, watching movies and many other functions could be made immeasurably better with a few extra inches. There is something here which is not obvious at first glance, but it is something that may well have millions pulling out their credit cards after the first play.

Microsoft eyes clean break with Windows Mobile 7
Microsoft is expected to come clean with Windows Mobile 7 next month in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress event. New ’7′ devices are expected to arrive by the end of the year.
From cnet- “Microsoft’s long and winding road toward regaining lost ground in the cell phone business will reach an important milestone in Barcelona next month.
At the annual Mobile World Congress event, Microsoft will at long last show off Windows Mobile 7–its oft-delayed major revamp of the decade-old Windows CE code base that has been at the core of its mobile operating system since the days of challenging the Palm Pilot.
Sources told CNET that Microsoft is still planning to finalize the code for Windows Mobile 7 by summer in order to have the new software on devices that ship before the end of the year.
Separately, though, Microsoft is also working on a new consumer phone line, early pictures of which cropped up last year, that is designed to be the next generation of the Sidekick product line that Microsoft inherited with its acquisition of Danger…”
QOTD: Mobile writing?
What is the longest thing you have written on your smartphone? I tend to write articles for 247 on my Bold 9700 when I am away from home and can now get to over 1000 words without too much hassle. I also once replied to an email and wrote over 10 words on my iPhone without spelling mistakes…;)

The annoying rumour buzz
The recent speculation surrounding the Apple Tablet device has reached fever pitch and the web is swamped with news about the hardware, the software, the potential markets it will dominate and even to the point of suggesting that it will “change the way we use personal computers”.
Am I the only one or is all of this speculation completely pointless? Some of it is no doubt leaked deliberately to gauge customer reaction to specific features and price points, but the majority of it is written on the back of a post-it note in the hope of gaining more visitors. There are articles summarising all of the rumours which is essence is summarising things other people have made up which is quite bizarre.
Apple doesn’t need a marketing department anymore because one snippet of information leaked will created an annoying buzz that is never ending until the item in question finally reaches reality. I have fallen into the trap and printed non-news about this mythical object a couple of times, but I have learnt from this experience and won’t be doing it again.
Some rumours have credibility regarding new smartphones and are worthy of news, but we seem to be living in a bubble where any snippet of information is worthy of online publishing and are thus diluting the content which is available to you all. I for one will only be posting credible rumours in the future and definitely none which involve an Apple product. Apple does not leak information that takes us anywhere close to the final offering (could be proved wrong later today) and thus all of the articles are little more than a few words to gloss over when you have nothing left to do except breathe…
After all the rumours the following happened (check out the video below, especially the bit at the end)-
Help!
Quick request. If you have any news that you would like to see on 247 or want to write a smartphone related thought or hardware / software review, please feel free to get in touch via the contact form. Some days it would really help to have some extra content that is different than what comes out of my head, if only for extra variety:)

2010 Independent Games Festival Mobile Reveals Finalists
The 2010 Independent Games Festival Mobile has named the finalists for its third annual competition with a huge number of titles running on the iPhone / iPod Touch platform. In fact, it is almost exclusively ‘i’ titles which is really saying something. Not sure what though…
From Gamasutra- “This year’s IGF Mobile marks a record number of entries with 170 titles submitted for the competition, up nearly 65 percent from last year’s total, which itself was double over the previous year. The finalists for IGF Mobile will compete for $5,000 in prizes, including specialized awards for art, design, audio, technical prowess, and iPhone game creation, as well as the IGF Mobile Best Game award.
Some of the notable titles nominated for this year’s IGF Mobile Awards include iPhone games such as double nominee, Tiger Style’s Spider: The Secret Of Bryce Manor, downloadable games for Nintendo’s DSi including Powerhead Games’ Glow Artisan, and promising titles from a host of worldwide indie developers, from England’s Studio FungFung through Finland’s Secret Exit and beyond.
This year, overall winners in each category will be announced on Feb. 8, 2010, with the category winners receiving $500 in prizes, a place as an overall IGF Mobile Best Game finalist, and the opportunity to showcase their mobile game at the IGF Pavilion during Game Developers Conference 2010 in San Francisco this March.”

IDC predict strong Windows Mobile growth, Windows Mobile 7 success
WMPower User has posted IDC predict strong Windows Mobile growth, Windows Mobile 7 success which comes from an article on InfoWorld entitled Google’s Android will surge in mobile OS wars, IDC says. If we ignore the ambiguity between Windows Mobile and Android we should maybe look at the fact that webOS doesn’t even get a mention…
“Google’s Android software will be the fastest growing operating system betwee\en now and 2013, when it will become the second most popular mobile OS, according to IDC. The IDC projection nearly mirrors recent findings by Gartner, which predicted that the Android OS will hit the second spot behind Nokia’s Symbian in 2012.
IDC said that Symbian and Android will be the two most popular operating systems on the 391 million smartphones it projects will ship in 2013. Research in Motion’s BlackBerry will be the third most popular mobile OS, followed by Windows Mobile and the iPhone, IDC said. Gartner predicted almost the same mix of OSes in 2012 as IDC did for 2013, but put the iPhone OS in fourth position, ahead of Windows Mobile. While Android will have the fastest growth of any OS through 2013, IDC noted that it will be running on the devices of a variety of manufacturers, which could “generate confusion among end users comparing their experiences with different Android devices.”"

Palm Selling Contract Free webOS Phones
Palm has added the option to purchase webOS phones out of contract to Palm.com. Sort of going back to the old days which is a good move in my view. From PIC- “With Verizon’s new webOS handsets now out the door, Palm has updated its online store with some new details on where to purchase the new devices. A surprising new option has materialized which gives shoppers the opportunity to buy a new Palm Pre or Pixi (plusses included) directly from Palm.com without a contract commitment or carrier credit check.
The standard Sprint Palm Pre and Pixi sell for $549 and $399, while the Pre Plus sells for $599. While this is a nice option for developers and customers, prospective purchasers must still pay the full unsubsidized price, and the CDMA devices seem to still be locked to their respective carriers. As of today, there is still no domestic unlocked option or a US GSM model offered at this time…”
