Google in process of fixing Nexus One

n1Google has posted an employee answer which says that a fix is in the works for the Nexus One 3G issues, with a slight dig at T-Mobile included for good measure- “I wanted to post an update to the Nexus One Help Forum to let you know what we’ve been working on to help address the 3G issues some of you have been facing. I also wanted to thank you for being patient as we work to investigate the problem, an effort which has included our hardware partners.

Our engineers have uncovered specific cases for which a software fix should improve connectivity to 3G for some users.  We are testing this fix now, initial results are positive, and if everything progresses as planned, we will provide an over-the-air software update to your phone in the next week or so.  It may be, however, that users are experiencing problems as a result of being on the edge or outside of 3G coverage, which a product fix cannot address.

Thanks again for your patience and for your feedback, and we will continue to keep you informed.” Source- BGR.

Vodafone Claims 450,000 Music Subscribers

vodafoneVodafone has claimed that it has 450,000 music subscribers to its unlimited subscription music service (the biggest in Europe?) Sadly there is no way to compare this to Nokias Comes With Music service so it is hard to know if this figure is impressive or not.

From mocoNews- “No single kind of digital service is going to save the music business on its own, but every little helps. Doing its bit, Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) came to the Midem music-biz event having totted up the number of paying customers it has for unlimited subscription music – the model that offers perhaps the most likely salvation…

The result: 450,000 around Europe. That makes it the continent’s biggest subscription music operator, it claimed (Spotify has just over 250,000, it said during the conference, and is looking to provide its service to mobile carriers). Voda attracted 100,000 music subscribers in December alone, it said at the event in Cannes.

The telco first started offering unlimited, DRM’ed music downloads for £1.99, via subscription-music vendor Omnifone’s MusicStation service, in September 2007, so has been in the game a relatively long time, but it’s recently started concentrating again on a la carte downloads, striking deals with major labels to remove DRM. That allows is to offer a bundle of 10 MP3s a month to consumers – an offering that labels have made standard to many retailers.”

QOTD: Data use?

qotd27What do you use your mobile data package for? I must admit that I never use mine for streaming video or music, uploading videos or for anything intensive. It is mainly just emails, tweeting and browsing.

The Silent(ish) Majority

silentWhen it comes to smartphone related headlines, the iPhone and Android OS dominate like nothing else. Symbian, webOS and BlackBerry receive lots of attention, but nothing even close to the fever pitched headlines that these two can muster up. What constantly amazes me is that for every excitable smartphone users whose pulse races when a new rumour surfaces, there are a thousand smartphone users who couldn’t care less.

RIM is the classic counter balance to the continual hype surrounding the iPhone and Android. It sells many more smartphones, but does not garner the kind of media attention seen elsewhere. BlackBerry users are quieter, if we ignore Pinstack and CrackBerry, and looking widely RIM does not generate the kind of publicity afforded to the main two. It is a curiosity in a world where it dominates.

The iPhone and Android thoroughly deserve the attention, don’t get me wrong, but how much of it is just words that sell and how much of it comes from Apple and Google in the first place? Apple is the master of smartphone marketing, but also the master at producing something which makes you sit up and stare. The hardware warrants the attention and so does Android OS, but are we all living in a tech bubble that the rest of the world still looks at as more than a little geeky.

Almost everyone I know who owns an iPhone, BlackBerry or HTC Hero has zero interest in news related to their phone. They use it, they download apps and that is as far as it goes for them. These are the people who drive the market and Apple and Google seem to be the only companies capable of holding their attention for more than a minute.

Steve Jobs Says Apple Tablet “Will Be The Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done.”

tabletSteve Jobs has apparently been overheard saying that the Apple Tablet “Will Be The Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done.” In my view this is a bit of a non-story because a) anyone would say that about their next product, b) it is probably carefully considered before it is leaked and c) OK, there isn’t a ‘c’, but it should still be a good piece of kit.

Nokia E72 vs E71 Review – First Impressions

dsDotsisx has written an excellent first impressions of the Nokia E71 v E72. They may look like similar smartphones, but there are numerous changes under the hood.

“Hello, I am Rita El Khoury and I have been a Nokia E71 addict for over 12 months”. E71-Addicts-Anonymous group therapy attendees respond in sync “Hello Rita”.

There’s little I have yet to say about how much I love my Nokia E71: build quality, day-to-day usability, productivity, responsiveness, robustness, this device just fits in my hand and there’s a warm feeling in my heart each time I put my SIM card back in it after having it in some other trial Symbian device. It’s just like wearing that comfortable pair of sneakers after going to a party in high heels: the latter are clean, chic and everyone marvels at them, but you know you couldn’t wear them daily like your filthy and scratched sneakers.

Hence, you can only picture my excitement at the idea of finally getting my hands on the E71’s successor when Nokia Lebanon told me they have a Nokia E72 ready for me to trial. As a matter of fact, I had already chalked it up, on paper, as my next device and a worthy upgrade from the E71…”

MP3 pioneers launch ‘deluxe’ file

MP3 is of course the format of choice for digital music at this time, but plans are afoot to bring something new to the party. The MusicDNA format will supposedly provide “lyrics, videos, artwork and blog posts, which will continually be updated, as well as the music.”

From the BBC- “It has been created by Norwegian developer Dagfinn Bach, who worked on the first MP3 player in 1993.

And its investors include German researcher Karlheinz Brandenburg, who is credited with inventing the MP3.

British record company Beggars Group, whose labels are home to Vampire Weekend, MIA and The Strokes, has signed up to use MusicDNA, as has US label Tommy Boy.

But no major labels are currently on board and the MusicDNA files are likely to be more expensive than current music downloads.

It will also be in competition with Apple’s iTunes LP, which gives users added content including bonus tracks, lyrics and video interviews.”

The smartphone crash around the corner

oldThere was a time when the desktop computer industry lived by specifications and as the market grew so did the yearning for more power and fancy gimmicks from the consumer. I remember well buying my first Pentium 75 PC with a 500MB hard drive and dreaming of a full 1GB one day. Computers were limited in their power and this created a huge market as consumers wanted something that could fulfil their needs and desires.

It still happens to a degree now, but I am willing to bet that the majority of people keep their computers longer now than they did 10 years ago. There is no reason why a PC or Mac bought 3 years ago will not have a couple of more years of use and be able to keep up with modern standards.

Smartphones have blossomed onto the mobile market in recent years and only now are millions of people starting to see the benefits of a multi-faceted device which can fulfil multiple needs. Despite the fact that the smartphone industry is in its infancy there will come a time when almost every task you need can be accomplished by your phone and so the trend will start to slacken. Admittedly this is not likely to happen within the next half-decade, but it will one day and the industry may have to look beyond the already too long 24 month standard contracts.

The battleground may move from gimmicks and features to reliability and practicality and as phones last longer so their desirability will lessen. There is no real point to this article except to point out that no industry can be fashionable and grow forever.

Who won the Touch Diamond?

tdWe recently ran a competition in which you had to give us your best definition of a smartphone, an object which no-one seems to be able to define. I went through the list multiple times and finally decided that Bill G came up with the simplest description of what a smartphone should be. His entry is below and the Touch Diamond is on the way to him in the US (I wish you lot would live nearer to save postal costs:))

“A smartphone is an internet capable mobile device capable of running multiple applications in a true operating system environment. It allows the user to customize the interface, install additional applications and to create a personal mobile environment for their needs.”

A big thanks must go to Peter who donated the Diamond for the competition.

Nokia N900 dual booting Maemo 5 and Android

Android is popping up on all sorts of phones at the moment which were not designed to run it and now it has appeared on the Nokia N900. The difference is that it is dual booting with Maemo 5 and despite being more of a PDA than a phone, this adds another strong to its bow.
