Nokia to Announce Big News January 21st
Nokia is to make a ‘big’ announcement on 21st January. Sadly it is likely to be Ovi Store related rather than heralding the birth of a fab new smartphone, but we will have to wait and see.
From The Nokia Blog- “A few members of the media have received invitations to an Ovi event on Thursday 21st January where some big news will be shared. Executive VP Anssi Vanjoki will take the stage along with Nokia UK GM Mark Lughran. I am looking forward to a device announcement, but I think this will be more about the Nokia Ovi store. We’ll find out soon.”

iPhone 4.0 details start rolling in
BGR has started the rush for specific iPhone 4.0 details and some of it looks ‘quite’ good. It is vague and loose at the moment so I won’t criticise, but I would love to see the PIM side changed completely in the next revision. Thanks to Trevor.
Here are some iPhone OS 4.0 features, according to our guy:
There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

QOTD: Phone lust?
Does the release of an updated version of your phone make you view your current device with less affection? I must admit that the presence of the iPhone 3GS makes my iPhone 3G feel slower than it really is:)

The Motorola Droid was proclaimed by many websites to be an iPhone killer when it was released in the US and seen as a return to form for Motorola who had not had any real successes since the RAZR mobile phone many, many years ago. For us in the UK the Milestone represents our chance to get in on the action and see for ourselves just how good this ‘wonder phone’ really is.
Hardware
Initial impressions are close to what I expected, but it is important not always judge a book by its cover. The problem here is that the cover is in my opinion opposed to what we expect a smartphone to look like in 2010. With the Nexus One, iPhone and Acer Liquid being examples of how full screen smartphones should look in 2010, the Milestone is verging on industrial in its design. It has sharp edges and a look that screams function more than anything else. I have no issue with phones that focus on function because that is of course most important, but there is no excuse not to lend some time to styling a device as well. I wouldn’t go as far as to call the Milestone ugly, but it isn’t far off and it reminds of the dark days of Fujitsu-Siemens and i-mate when their design departments seemed to be having holidays.
The Milestone is actually quite slim for a slide-out keyboarded unit and makes good use of the hardware features within. The 3.7” screen is delightful and compliments the Android interface well with just the lip of the keyboard sticking out at the bottom. I don’t understand why the back has to be longer than the front because the screen may as well have been made longer or the buttons below the screen larger- if anything it lacks uniformity especially when the keyboard is open. Below the screen are four flush buttons for return, menu, home and search and the obligatory camera and volume keys are well placed on the right-hand side. The on/off button on the top is awkward to use at best and its positioning right next to the 3.5mm audio jack could be better. The microUSB charging port is high up on the left which is a pet hate of mine- these things should be on the bottom edge.
Sliding out the keyboard reveals a setup which somehow managed to rival the Nokia N97 in its stupidity. The keys are tiny and flush with the casing and do not use the space afforded to them properly. Throw in the large navigation key to the right and you end up with a hardware keyboard that so far has proved very difficult for me to use. The positioning of the keys on the left, however, makes lots of sense and feels quite natural, but I will need more time with the phone before I conclude my keyboard thoughts.
Specifications
You can’t knock the specifications on this phone- HSDPA, AGPS, Wi-Fi, 5Mp camera with DVD quality video capture and a whole heap more means that you are getting a smartphone more than capable of coping with the relatively efficient Android OS. MOTONAV gives you turn-by-turn navigation out of the box and the rest of the software will take some time to cover, but that is far from a bad thing.
First impressions were not good, but second impressions suggest to me that the Milestone could be something special. There are aspects of this phone which I have not seen on any phone before and some of the features put every other smartphone on the market to shame. Come back tomorrow for part two which will explore these features in more depth.

Another Data Outage For BlackBerry Users?
I love my BlackBerry a great deal, but the number of recent outages is starting to get more than a little annoying. This article at CrackBerry, and the responses, suggests that there were problems again yesterday.
“Reports are rolling in, the forums are filling up and yes, we appear to have another data outage on our hands. While all confirmations have been vocal from customer care reps Rogers and T-Mobile have stated that RIM is having an issue at the moment with no current ETA for a fix. Last outage was attributed to BBM and all users were advised to upgrade to the newest BlackBerry messenger. This time, we don’t know as of yet but one thing is for sure, it’s getting kind of old. Let us know in the comments folks if you are having some issues and sit tight, while we wait this one out.”

Mobile Web Server beta archived
Nokia is closing one of its beta lab projects, Mobile Web Server- “After over two and a half years in beta, Mobile Web Server is now being archived from Nokia Beta Labs. We’re sorry it has to be this way, but as an experimental prototype, there’s no guarantee that it will last forever. Future plans are still open so we can’t say yet how this activity will evolve further, but as a team we are strong believers that this kind of concept will become a trend some day.
For those using mymobilesite.net, the service and related support will be discontinued by the end of January 2010. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. When the service is stopped you won’t be able to reach your mobile from the Internet with a familiar web address anymore. However, your Mobile Web Server device software remains as it is and stays available for usage in local mode. The data that you have created remains on your device and it will not be lost even when the service ends.
We would like to thank everyone that used, tuned, and helped develop Mobile Web Server and mymobilesite.net. It has been great pleasure to work with you in such a revolutionary concept.”

Apple to launch its ‘latest creation’ on 27th January
Apple has now confirmed that it will hold an invitation only event on 27th January in San Francisco. Between you and I, it could be the tablet device. Doh! Thanks to Trevor.
From MacUser- “The e-mail reads “Come see our latest creation,” with the Apple logo super-imposed on a background of paint splotches. Apple’s invitations usually include some clue as to what the event will be about—the invite to last fall’s iPod-only event, for example, featured a silhouetted iPod dancer with the words “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it.” The fact that this latest invitation doesn’t reference any existing products will only fuel the speculation that Apple has something new up its sleeve—and that something could be the tablet-based computer of myth, legend, and song.”

Vodafone Sure Signal: 100% 3G coverage?
Vodafone is now offering the Sure Signal product which is promoted as offering a strong mobile signal no matter where you live. This could help with 3G access which can be choppy on any network, but something sticks in my head about this. Why should I pay to receive a good mobile signal when I already pay a monthly tariff?
“Vodafone Sure Signal gives you a strong mobile phone signal in your home – no matter where you live. Using your home broadband, it boosts the signal throughout your house for up to four people at the same time. And it’s really easy to set up.
If you live in a mobile signal blackspot – places in the UK where mobile operators are unable to give customers a strong enough signal in their homes – Sure Signal is for you. You just need home broadband with a minimum line speed of 1Mbps, plus a 3G mobile phone.
Sure Signal is available from just £50 as a one-off cost – or you can get it for only £5 a month from your local store. What you’ll pay is based on your price plan.”

QOTD: Overhyped?
What in your opinion has been the most overhyped smartphone to date? I am tempted to say the Nexus One, but haven’t used one yet so will hold off.
Handwriting Recognition on the way back?
Handwriting recognition was all the rage a few years back and millions of people grew to love the quirky input systems on the early PDAs of which Graffiti was the most prominent. Palm managed to create a system that could be utilised to input up to 5 words per minute and to this day no other company has come close to reaching that level. Ultimately Graffiti became a battlefield for lawyers and it eventually scrawled its way into the history books. Some would say that Apple has created a touch screen data input system that is as fact as Graffiti, but you will never convince me.
With the current trend veering sharply towards smartphones with large screens and traditional keyboard layouts we seem to have completely forgotten about handwriting recognition as a viable form of mobile phone text input. The question remains as to if it is still viable in this age of phones that the user does not want to learn to use. Most people want to be up and running in minutes and to be texting, tweeting and doing whatever else with the least fuss possible, but just maybe something quiet is happening in the background that could see the re-emergence of handwriting recognition.
If a manufacturer could make a full screened capacitive smartphone which allowed you to use a traditional onscreen keyboard and also handwriting recognition that may have a place in the hearts of some users, and possibly of more importance as a marketing gimmick. I have scant information at present, but don’t be surprised to see a return of this long forgotten form of input sometime in 2010 from a manufacturer who understands it inside out…
The perfect mobile setup
Jason recently commented on a 247 article about the iPod Touch with the following, and in it he describes his perfect setup; an iPod Touch and a Palm Centro-
“1) At least in America, more people would NOT buy iPhones if the iPod Touch did not exist because they either hate AT&T, realize it is far more expensive to own a iPhone than an iPodTouch and a smart or dumb phone, or they do not want a phone that does not have tactile keys.
2) I have the 64GB iPodTouch 3G and my still wonderful Palm Centro (which now I use mostly for phone, texting and some GPS related stuff like DirectoryAssist, GoogleMaps, etc since iPod Touch does not have a GPS chip). I am very happy with this combo. There are some phones that can generate a WiFi hotspot so you can use the great Apple/3rd party apps and access the internet on the best mobile browser in the world.
3) I have Skype on my iPodTouch so I can also make calls when in WiFi area. 75% of the day I am in WiFi area (work and home).
4) The music, video and web browser, app updates, OS updates (an update from Palm only came by buying a new phone) on the iPodTouch are the best I have ever seen. I did not even know I had 1100 songs on all my CDs till I found a place to store them all! Since it is flash, I can run with it (rather than hard drive-based players).
5) I have all the mail accounts, calendars I want in one place and they open and render so well. Contacts are a little challenging (still keep most on my phone but work contacts I have via Exchange Server). The readers are not as good (I loved TealDoc…read and write!)
6) I am too happy with my setup. If the iPhone had a keyboard or slideout or flip up phone buttons, I might consider it.”
