BBC iPlayer now available on BlackBerry
It’s been a long wait, but the BBC iPlayer has at last arrived on the BlackBerry platform. All you need to do is go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/bbapps/ and then download the shortcut which will start the process. I haven’t had time to test it yet, but will report back as soon as I have had some quality time with it.

Download and install any US webOS App Catalog app to a non-US Palm
It is rather irritating that non-US webOS users cannot install US App Catalog apps to their devices, but IPKfletcher changes all of that. From PUGcast- “App Catalog dowloads under webOS are restricted to the user’s origin and thus, Northern American webOS users see different apps as we over in Europe.
There are ways to trick the App Catalog and install the apps by their ID from the within the webOS’ command line, but this is uncomfortable and not easy done by everyone.
A German member from Germany’s Number one Palm forum www.Nexave.de today has provided a so-called IPKfetcher tool for download, which retrieves any free app from within the app catalog and installs it by precentral’s webOS Quick Install as regular as any other file installation. Make sure you take the latest quick install version 2.03. The downloader is written in JAVA and thus is crossplatform…”

O2 launches new ‘sim only’ tariff for smartphones
O2 has launched a new ‘SIM only’ tariff for smartphone users which appears to be good value on the surface.
Customers who already have an iPhone or are just happy with their existing Smartphone can choose from a range of sim only tariffs starting at just £15 per month for 300 minutes, unlimited UK texts, data & Wi-Fi on a 12-month sim only contract, or from £20 per month on a 30-day rolling contract.
Those customers who don’t ever want to worry about how many minutes or texts or how much data they have used, O2 introduces a set of tariffs offering unlimited UK calls, texts and data from just £45 a month.
iPhone customers who want to use their iPhone as a modem can do so and not pay more than £2 per day with O2’s newest Internet Tethering Bolt On.

Palm CEO’s Letter to Employees
The Wall Street Journal has posted a letter from Palm CEO, Jon Rubenstein, to employees. Here’s an extract- “I realize this news is difficult to swallow. We made this announcement today to prevent a surprise for Wall Street when we announce quarterly earnings in March. In the meantime, the entire executive team has been working extremely hard to improve product performance, and have implemented a number of initiatives to increase awareness and drive sales.
Dave Whalen and I just returned from a very successful meeting with Verizon Wireless, where they acknowledged that their execution of our launch was below expectations and recommitted to working with us to improve sales. To accelerate sales, we initiated Project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly two hundred Palm Brand Ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, have been training Verizon sales reps across the U.S. on our products. Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week. You may have also seen a growing number of Palm ads on billboards, bus shelters, buses, and subway stations—all getting the word out about Palm…”
webOS 1.4
Reports are emerging that some GSM users have started to receive the latest webOS update. Excellent news if so (Yours truly will let you know when it arrives at mine – not yet!).
The latest update is supposed to bring performance enhancements, some new features, and importantly, support for Flash (Note: Flash to be available later, as a separate download). Support for European App Purchases is also due, Palm said March (Though maybe its part of the update?).
More information to follow…

QOTD: Useless functions?
What function(s) on your smartphone have you never, or very rarely, used? It’s still the voice recording feature for me which I have used a couple of times in my whole life.
Co-Pilot Live UK & Ireland for iPhone Review: the follow up
Over 6 months ago I reviewed Co-Pilot Live for iPhone and was more than impressed with the product. It was a beta build which had some features not available until quite recently and so I decided to upgrade to the latest version with the Live Traffic service: total cost £47.98.
Navigation is important to me because I drive more than 20,000 miles a year for work and it is one area where I have to have the best available. Living in the UK means that traffic is a constant problem, especially because the M25 is my gateway to everywhere, and thus traffic tracking is also a facility I rely on every week.
I wasn’t expecting anything remarkable in the new Co-Pilot except the loss of the messages I kept receiving when enabling the traffic feature because it had run out of time, but I have been more than surprised at how it has changed in the short period of time since the original release. The first change I noticed was how much smoother it is now and it really does feel like a dedicated GPS system in use; button taps are immediately recognised and the animation while navigating is now spot on. I used to see the occasional lag when leaving roundabouts, but after 4 long trips I have not noticed this once.
There are some more subtle changes such as the way speed cameras are notified and the onscreen setup works very well indeed; you are presented with the distance to the camera, your current speed and the actual speed limit you should be attaining. A ‘ding’ noise then sounds when you are clear to break the speed limit again (did I actually write what was in my head there?). Besides the speed camera display, the interface in general is one of the best I have seen on any GPS system- it strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and complexity yet cleverly offers all of the information you need to see in an easy to view system.
The core of any navigation system is of course the routes it takes you on and I have learnt to trust Co-Pilot, most of the time. Over the past few months I have been presented with many quicker routes than I knew about previously yet at times it can take me down roads which I know are slower than the shortcuts I have learnt over time. This tends to happen in busy towns and to be fair a TomTom with the much touted IQ Routes does exactly the same. No GPS software will ever be perfect, but I live in hope.
The traffic service has also added a sense of security to long trips and to date it has not failed me once. It diverted me off the M27 when a friend of mine got stuck for over an hour and did the same with the M25 travelling from Gatwick to Birmingham. The most poignant example was later in the Birmingham to Gatwick return trip when a sign on the side of the motorway declared the M23 to be closed. This sign kept popping up for 10 miles, but Co-Pilot showed no problems. As I reached the M23 turn off I put my full faith in Co-Pilot and merrily travelled along a fully open M23. When roadside warning signs get it wrong, you start to lose trust in any system.
To date Co-Pilot Live has performed flawlessly for me and finally broken the stranglehold TomTom had on my navigation needs. On the App Store there are conflicting views about Co-Pilot, as there are with all apps and games, but in my experience it has been just about perfect so far and extremely good value at the current price point.
Available from the iTunes App Store for £26.99
Clarity: PDA-247 has no commercial relationship with ALK.
BIS 3.0 Upgrade Coming Next Week?
According to BerryReview BIS 3.0 could see the light of day next week. Some small, but ultimately useful, updates should be forthcoming- “One of our solid sources let us know that RIM’s BIS 3.0 upgrade is still on schedule for next week. Maybe RIM intends it to coincide with the release of the new free BES Express in March? We can only take this at face value since RIM is notorious for blowing past internal rollout dates but this date has stayed pretty solid for the last few weeks.
The thing is that most BIS upgrades are done over the weekend with EMEA going first and then NA coming a week or two after. That pegs this rollout to start either this weekend or the next…”

Microsoft shares more details on Windows Phone Starter Edition
Microsoft has shared more information about Windows Phone 6.5 Starter Edition and it sounds slightly more useful than Windows 7 starter for the PC i.e. not useful at all.
From ZDNet- “Neowin first reported over a week ago that Microsoft was planning a Starter version of its mobile operating system. But that news was overshadowed by all the Windows Phone 7 Series hoopla from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Windows Phone Starter is similar in concept to the original Windows Starter Edition products. Windows XP and Windows Vista Starter were products exclusively tailored for emerging markets. With Windows 7, Microsoft broadened the availability of the Starter Edition to include all countries, with Home Basic becoming the new emerging-market-only SKU. So far, it seems as though Phone Starter is going to be an emerging-market play only and not a low-end platform for users in developed countries.
As Neowin noted, Windows Phone Starter will be available in two versions (one with Office Mobile and one without).”

Poor results from Palm
The latest results from Palm are not looking good at all, especially in an industry where momentum is everything.
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb 25, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) today indicated that it expects that revenues for the third quarter of fiscal year 2010 will be in the range of $285 million to $310 million on a GAAP basis and in the range of $300 million to $320 million on a non-GAAP basis.1 Revenues for the quarter and full year are being impacted by slower than expected consumer adoption of the company’s products that has resulted in lower than expected order volumes from carriers and the deferral of orders to future periods. Accordingly, Palm expects fiscal year 2010 revenues to be well below its previously forecasted range of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion. The company will provide more detail on its financial results during Palm’s third-quarter financial results conference call currently scheduled for Thursday, March 18.
“Palm webOS is recognized as a groundbreaking platform that enables one of the best smartphone experiences available today, and our work to evolve the platform and bring industry-leading technology to market continues. However, driving broad consumer adoption of Palm products is taking longer than we anticipated,” said Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer. “Our carrier partners remain committed, and we are working closely with them to increase awareness and drive sales of our differentiated Palm products.”
The Company expects to close its third fiscal quarter with a cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments balance in excess of $500 million.
Palm will announce its third-quarter fiscal year 2010 financial results on Thursday, March 18, shortly after 4 p.m. Eastern (1 p.m. Pacific), followed by a conference call for the public at 4:30 p.m. Eastern (1:30 p.m. Pacific).
Also, this from Business Insider doesn’t help matters- the stock has tanked already. Thanks to Trevor- ”
Palm is slashing its guidance, confirming that its Pre and Pixi smartphones and WebOS platform have been off to a slow start. Palm shares are down 18% on the news.
Since there’s no obvious way that Palm is going to boost its market share — even selling its phones at Verizon Wireless, the top U.S. carrier, hasn’t helped much, and we doubt AT&T will make a big impact — it seems that CEO Jon Rubinstein would be best off looking for a buyer now.
So who wants a next-generation smartphone platform? RIM? Nokia? HP? Dell?
Palm expects third-quarter sales to be in the range of $285 million to $310 million on a GAAP basis and $300 million to $320 million on a non-GAAP basis. The Street was expecting $425 million.
Palm also expects full year sales to be “well below” its forecasted range of $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion; the Street was expecting $1.6 billion.
“Revenues for the quarter and full year are being impacted by slower than expected consumer adoption of the company’s products that has resulted in lower than expected order volumes from carriers and the deferral of orders to future periods,” the company said in a statement.”
