Does Barnes & Noble care?

5 February 2010 by Shaun 4 Comments

bnpre central is reporting that a webOS version of eReader is unlikely to see the day which leaves customers of both eReader and fictionwise in the dark as far as their previous purchases are concerned. This is hardly surprising from a company like Barnes & Noble who is leaving anyone outside of the US in the dark for eBook purchases as well…

“Contrary to what Jason Robitaille wrote a few months ago, eReader may not be coming to webOS after all. jeffro77 reported the following recently in the PreCentral Forums that the eReader.com support folks wrote to say that “There are no plans to create a version of eReader that is native to the webOS platform.”

While eReader as well as a webOS version of Mobipocket Reader have been eagerly hoped for by webOS e-book fans, particularly those of us who have previously purchased secure e-books from sites like Fictionwise and eReader.com (now sister sites, owned by Barnes & Noble) and read them on our previous Palm phones and PDAs, this news is disappointing but not disastrous. That’s because there is a growing number of e-book reader programs for the Pre and Pixi.”

Barnes & Noble care maybe just as much as Palm cares about their loyal European customers. I’m living in The Netherlands and have been using Palm since 1996 but am still waiting for the Palm Pre or Pixi. On their website it says Coming soon but that also stood there a year ago. What is that with the American company’s, are they trying to isolate the USA from the rest of the world? This is not the first time, we had to wait over a year for the iPhone, now the same with Palm and Google is going the same way with the Nexus One. I think it’s time for us to boycot those company’s and just not buy their stuff anymore.

I stopped using ereader when I got a Nokia, and the application for it kept crashing making reading ebooks impossible. Soon after the fiasco with restricted ebook purchase started which led me to find other means of acquiring reading material. This kinda sux, since I am actually happy to pay. Can’t authors unite and put their material directly online for people who actually appreciate the work and effort they put into their art, and who are happy to pay for their material. It does feel like publishers don’t want to make money sometimes doesn’t it?!

my ereader app does not work on my iPhone since I updated to OS 3.

I COULD delete everything and reinstall, and it might work.

    Instead, I’m just using Stanza.

Barnes and Noble has no strategy at the moment, it is in pure reactive mode.
