QOTD: Kids and smartphones?

8 February 2010 by Shaun 3 Comments

qotd27What smartphone apps would you recommend for children? I suspect that many will be iPhone related, but The Smelly Sprout is one I highly recommend alongside Colorama. Thanks to Philippa for the question.

Well, while waiting at the doctors or in a restaurant (in case they are not offering coloring books and cayons) my son will inevitably challange me into a game of Bowling, Memoria or Timbiriche for PalmOS.

My eldest son really likes the lightsabre app – complete with silly sound effects! My youngest simply likes the bubbles popping programs. He loves seeing photos too.

Word games are good for helping with spelling and vocabulary if they have help in them. Colour-matching games are great for learning colour and shape recognition.

Of course, it also depends on what age the children are. When we designed StarPop we asked lots of families for their feedback. You can see some of their comments on the game’s website here: http://www.starpopgame.com/comments.html. Something that younger kids love, older children can find boring, but then some adults find entertaining because it allows them to not have to think for a bit!
