When buying a new smartphone do you confine yourself to a particular OS before you start looking or are you open to try new things if the hardware/software balance looks good? I tend to always have a pre-defined OS in my head.

The OS dominates for me but bad hardwRe would be a shoe stopper.

I would never have bought the HTC Desire as I gelt Android was immature. But when you look at the hardware spec of the Desire (AMOLED screen & 1GHz CPU) and the relatively low price (I got a 24 month contract with unlimited internet with a total cost of £404 inc. the cost of the phone) it was compelling enough for me to have a dip in the ‘Android camp”. I am now totally sold on Android as it has the polish of Apple iPhone OS, the stability of Symbian and flexibility of WM6.5 (by the way a lot of Symbian developers worked on Adroid).
Hardware first then the os. A phone that creaks in your hand made with cheap materials (palm pre) and has a limited set of features(wifi not working as it should, nokia) won’t even be considered now. I have to say I had my eyes opened when i sent back my e90 and replaced it with a tytn 2. Even my Mrs has commented on “your best phone”
I’m afraid I get swayed by the OS first, and look at the hardware second. If it’s really flawed HW then it will put me off but I’m willing to live with a couple of defects (low res camera or less than stellar battery life). One thing that would always put me off is shoddy construction though,.
Definitely OS first and then hardware. Obviously choosing WebOS limits my choice of hardware slightly!

@jah, your total cost of £404 looks really low. How did you manage that?
Which carrier is offering this?
