QOTD: Did you get an iPad?
I guess this question is more for those of you outside the US, but did you get an iPad this weekend and what are your thoughts on it?

Blue Route for iPad: Download web pages using your iPhone, and view them on your iPad!
Blue Route for the iPad is a clever new product from TheWay, Ltd and will provide a ‘much needed’ facility for many new iPad owners who also happen to own an iPhone.
“No wireless network for your iPad? No problem! Download web pages using your iPhone, and view them on your iPad!
This app REQUIRES two devices, an iPhone 3g or 3gs, and an iPad – both devices must be running Blue Route.
It may also be used with two iPads, one of which has Edge or 3g service.
If you have no Edge/3g Blue Route may also be used to share access to a private wireless network.
If you can browse the web, you can share the web with Blue Route!
If you have an iPhone and an iPad, you know you wish you could view the web on that big screen when out and about – now you can!
Nothing to configure, nothing to adjust, Blue Route is easy to use.
Blue Route will quickly become your best friend away from home, turning your iPhone into a pocket proxy server for your iPad.
Blue Route is a Universal App – which means if you buy it on your iPhone or iPad, and use the same iTunes account on each, you can both of your devices.”

Cut My Sim
The Cut My Sim product could be needed pretty soon if manufacturers start to use the new micro SIM in big numbers. It offers a clean cut for your current SIM card and crucially a ‘back to normal’ feature so you can use it again as a full sized SIM. A good idea, but at $29 you may wish to club together with some friends so you can all use it, only once.
“We will start shipping the “Cut my Sim” including the “Back to normal” at the end of June. If you preorder now, we won’t charge any shipping costs (world wide offer!).
The price of the brand new “Cut My Sim” including “Back to Normal” is only $29 or $18.95 Euro. All units are handmade. The first edition is 500 units.”

iPad first impressions
On Thursday my wife called me to say UPS had delivered my iPad. This was a surprise since I wasn’t expecting it until Friday.
I got home from work about 9pm, and after eating a lovely pepperoni pizza, I started to open the iPad box. I must admit I felt like a kid in the candy store. What surprised me was how little was in the box and the 3G sim card tray tool is too small. I have already misplaced this!
Anyway, I had to fire up my laptop, and connect the USB lead to start setting up my iPad. I selected to sync all my music, video and selected photos. I also synced across all my new iPad apps and games and non iPad software. And then I turned it on. One word, wow and omg. Its really got an amazing screen that makes every app look and feel great eg mail and calendar.
I used my iPad for at least 4 hours last night and it’s had wifi and games and all sorts in use most of the day ie 10 hours of use. My battery is down to 65%. Now that is phenomenal.
I have since removed most of my non iPad apps, since the iPad bespoke versions are so much prettier and IMO make the iPad shine. Gaming on the iPad is awesome. Consoles are going to be struggling to compete. I played Need for Speed, Oddblob, Astraware Casino and Sudoku and the game graphics are hot. Web browsing is a dream. The music quality is the best I have heard from any portable music device.
I haven’t used my HTC HD2 or iPod touch since getting the iPad. Now it’s setup, I do not need to use my laptop, as web browsing, email, and everything is so much better on the iPad. Photos come alive as does every game.
What makes the iPad special – the tight integration of the software and hardware, coupled with the iTunes and AppStore built in.
I am loving every minute of the amazing machine. Would I recommend it? You bet.
It’s a shame it so expensive as this does prevent a large number of people buying this machine. But then Apple are apparently selling over 200,000 per week.

History of touchscreen gadgets
The History of touchscreen gadgets at the BBC is a decent pictorial look back, all the way to 1982, at how the touchscreen has evolved. It’s fair to say that the first touchscreen was somewhat thicker than the iPad…

Some good news from Astraware- grab the discounts while you can. Just go to iTunes and search for ‘Astraware’.
Astraware is excited to announce a limited time offer on games for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Okay I’m kidding, but can’t help but raise an eyebrow at whomever decided to release the Palm Pre Plus in the UK on the same day…

QOTD: How long?
Digital journalism: how much should it cost?
The Times is about to start charging £1 a day or £2 a week for access to its newspapers which I initially thought was expensive. Murray made a good point though- “This is symptomatic of people today, for some reason a lot of people expect to get most things for free these days. The Times is regarded as a quality paper and has the right to charge for quality journalism, they’re a business after all.” However, vboelema came up with “I guess for now I’ll be part of the 90%.” meaning that most people will not pay for the content.
It is a difficult line to tread, but maybe The Times pricing is not too bad when you consider the cost of the paper editions. The problem is that most people perceive, rightly or wrongly, that digital editions should either be free or very cheap. I listened to a radio interview the other day and it was apparent that the cost of producing the online edition of The Times is minimal in comparison to the paper one. Indeed, in response to the news that GQ Magazine had only sold 365 iPad magazine copies, the publisher said “This costs us nothing extra: no printing or postage (…) Everything is profit, and I look forward to the time when iPad issue sales become a major component to our circulation.”
Imagine Publishing offers its magazines for £1.99 per issue which compares well to the print editions in terms of cost and you can download each new issue directly from within the magazine app. Wired, however, has gone in a different direction; in the US you can get 12 issues (1 year) for $10 by subscription and you get a T-Short thrown in for good measure. For the same price you can pick up only 2 issues of the iPad edition of the magazine. How does that make sense? Yes it is interactive, but that does not justify such a price gap and I am convinced that many would pay $10 for a year’s worth of the iPad edition.
I am not saying that good quality content should not have a price, but that it should ‘always’ cost less than content printed on paper.

PAC-Match Party by Namco: Ms PacMan all over again?
Namco is in the process of releasing PAC-Match Party for the iPhone which is a Tetris v Bejeweled style game involving PacMan. Remember when Ms PacMan sold millions of copies just by adding a bow to the main character? Feels like that all over again…

First Symbian^3 handset coming, but not from Nokia
It looks likely that the first Symbian^3 handset will be released by an Asian vendor (not named yet) rather than Nokia. Lee Williams has been quoted by Reuters as saying “Symbian 3 is almost completely mature. There is a small share of code which is pending checking by its contributors.” which should surely suggest that it could be available very quickly. Any thoughts on who the vendor may be?

There are many specialist apps available for the iPhone, but I doubt that many are as complete as Pipe Tool from SpicyClam. It should be available soon, but in the meantime check out the video demo below-

Opening My Eyes
I have been happily plodding along waiting for my new iPhone 2010 (hopefully June) until last night I was made to think. I was at dinner and the person next to me had an HTC HD2. I had a little play and whilst I didn’t see anything in those 2 mins that made me want the HD2, I did see plenty that made me realise that the iPhone was not the only game in town. It was honestly the first time in about 18months that I had realistically even considered the notion of anything other than an iPhone. It looked like an iPhone, felt like an iphone and seemed to do all that an iPhone could do. Bear in mind I had about 2 mins on the device. It did feel too big for my taste.
I do think that come renewal time in the next few weeks I will actually look at the price of the new iPhone as well as some Android devices. If there’s little in it I will stay with Apple due to Apps and also consistancy, but if there’s an Android deal to be had then I could certainly do a little more research and maybe, just maybe could jump ship. A brief dinner time conversation opened my eyes. It’s amazing what you see when you open your eyes.
I know the pic isn’t an HD2 by the way but it is an Android device.
Sid
