What will Apple say today?

16 July 2010 by Shaun 19 Comments

At 10am today (Pacific time) Apple will hold a press conference which will presumably address the iPhone problems. This is fascinating in many ways; will Apple own up to problems? Will it simply offer free bumpers? Or will it carry on with the continue with the ’silent’ replacement of broken iPhones? My only hope is that the proximity sensor issue is addressed one way or another. What do you think Apple will say?

What problem? Will use press conference to get even more free hype and marketing!

They will admit it but not say it’s a bad as everyone makes out and the new update provides a better reading and more accurate bars. Will offer bumpers if wanted or tell people to go back and get money back. Apple know not many people will ask for money back. I say 

They will admit their mistakes and offer refunds/replacements to certain serial number batches of iPhones

I’m sure Gavin is right but the bumpers won’t be free.
    It’s a minor problem
os update fixed it for most people
can buy bumper if wanted (may be a price reduction!)
if not return it with no restocking fee
then some good news. white iPhone or something to get some positive attention.

@ Philippa lol now that’s more like it – the batch/ serial idea might be more like it , maybe vouchers for accessories

Seth Godin says something on his blog today that made me think straight away of the Apple fiasco:

“The thing is, in their rush to play it safe and then their urgency to salvage everything in the face of an emergency, most organizations…throw their customers or their people under the bus (“we had no choice”) but rarely take the pro-active steps necessary to fail quietly, and often, in private, in advance, when there’s still time to make things better. Better to have a difficult conversation now than a failed customer interaction later.”

    Latest rumours:

    - the new Ipod is coming with a 3mp camera (and also updated MacBook Air)
    - there 2 s/w problems, one with the iPhone signal notification and one deeper in the base radio related area (too complicated for me to understand!)
    - white Iphone 4 to be offered to unhappy iPhone 4 customers (exchange)!

I like my iPhone 4 and it’s working for me so I don’t need a replacement, but I’ll take a free bumper if they’re offering.

I saw that rumoured 11.6″ Macbook Air and almost fainted with excitement. If there’s one thing that put me off the current model, it’s that it’s the same screen size as my existing Macbook, so little benefit just being thinner. I’d jump at a smaller thinner laptop for travelling, weekends away, vacations etc.

No problems with my iPhone 4, so my only interest in the event is to see how Apple deals with the media witch hunt that is going on at the moment.

It’s a tricky problem, because truth and fairplay have gone out of the window.

Apple could start by not thinking of it as a witch hunt and dealing with the problem. The more it opens up and offers back, the more confidence and sales it will have in the future.

Doesn’t feel like a witch hunt when you accidentally cut off every call…

The actual problems that some people are experiencing are easier to fix than tackling the media’s desire to nail Apple to the wall.

  • Shaun (author) said:

Agreed, but Apple hasn’t helped itself so far. Some of the problems are minor, but they can seriously affect use for some.

Apple’s approach so far has been far too reserved. Jump on it, shut people up and move on. Should have happened many days ago.

I agree that Apple may have been a bit slow off the mark to fully address this, but I think it’s easy to forget that the iPhone 4 was launched barely 3 weeks ago, too.

By the way, did you get your replacement iPhone?

  • jah said:

The media has given Apple a lot of free hype as well. I think it seems balanced to me.

After some deliberation I exchanged it for a Samsung Galaxy S. Very little to choose between the two.

  • gavinfabl said:

    That’s a shame. What is Alice’s Robot gonna do now :) !

Are you happier with the S?

  • JohnnyRay said:

You swapped an iPhone for a Galaxy?!? Idiot!

  • Shaun (author) said:

No, I didn’t swap it for a Galaxy S (why would I do that? T’was a joke). I didn’t have time to get to the store and will swap it for a new iPhone 4 tomorrow.

Seriously Johnny- I have no issue with people having big discussions on 247, but you just post nonsense every time you come on here that is so pro-Apple it’s ridiculous. Call anyone on this site an idiot again and you are banned.
