Study Finds That Apple Dominates Tech News

A new study shows that Apple generates a disproportionate amount of tech coverage in comparison to its rivals. This won’t be news to many of you and it is indeed ironic that the amount of tech coverage Apple gets creates more coverage for Apple…

From NYT- “A yearlong look at technology news coverage by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that 15.1 percent of tech articles were primarily about Apple; 11.4 percent were about Google; and a meager 3 percent were about Microsoft.

It’s not as if Microsoft lacks for public relations people. But Apple is especially effective at seizing journalists’ attention, said Amy S. Mitchell, the deputy director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism, citing the anticipation for new devices and Apple’s “very public way of releasing products.”

Apple software powers only a tiny slice of the world’s computers, an area dominated by Microsoft. But its popular and innovative iPods and iPhones helped Apple exceed Microsoft’s market capitalization earlier this year.

Ms. Mitchell said she was surprised by the extent of Apple’s domination of the media’s diet, “even over Google.”

QOTD: Mobile TV?

Do you believe that mobile TV has a future? See today’s main article for my thoughts.

Mobile TV: it can’t possibly work

Mobile TV has at times been considered the major breakthrough for mobile telephony over the past few years, but it has failed to take off. There are countless examples of network providers and manufacturers trying to open up the idea to the masses and to date every single one has failed.

Virgin Mobile sold a TV phone (aptly named the Lobster) a couple of years ago that was so appallingly bad that everyone I knew who got within 3 feet of one laughed. Besides the awful design, the reception quality was akin to watching a TV from the 1940’s, and one with a bad signal at that.

Vodafone dabbled in subscription based mobile TV, as have other network providers, but it was not widespread enough to take off. With limited channels and dodgy picture quality under 3G this solution never will capture the imagination of the general public.

TVCatchup is an excellent free service that brings good quality TV to select mobile users and is by far the best example of this technology working that I have seen to date. Ideally Wi-Fi is needed, but that doesn’t detract from the fact that it works well and provides a good user experience. My son often watches it on his iPod Touch in bed when we want some peace and quiet and in that situation it has a place.

However, there is a fundamental problem with mobile TV that means it will never take off. Mobile TV is to be used when you are out and about. But, when you are out and about you are doing something else. At no point in my life have I sat in a coffee shop or anywhere else and thought that I would like to watch live TV. Catching up on TV I have missed via iPlayer is a bonus, but is something I do when I am in the house or in a hotel; places that have TVs in them.

Watching TV is an activity best done when sat on a sofa, when you want to get away from the real world and the technology that can dominate it. I don’t want a TV programme to be interrupted by emails, text messages and various other notifications. I want to sit down with a coffee and enjoy what I am watching. For this reason I struggle to see where mobile TV will fit into our lives in the future. I will never say never, but I still can’t see it becoming commonplace.

Click the Elephant!

If you use EverNote you can now load any PDA-247 content into your EverNote account by clicking the Elephant below each article. You do need to click the title first to bring up the single article page, working on that one, but tests have gone well so far and this could be useful if you want to read the longer articles and reviews later on. The resulting pop-up offers you the choice of which notebook to save the article in and the final article should show just the text and images from the article itself, not the entire site page. All feedback welcome.

COTD: Peace to all PDA lovers

Today’s comment of the day goes to PDA Luvr in response to comments about the legendary Clie TH55. The writing style is unusual to say the least, but the story holds up well- “I too feel the same way….however mine is the IPAQ 4300 running WM2003. I really tried to see if I could come up to date on a nice stand alone PDA. I looked at the IPAQ 211, but I could not come up with a good reason to buy it. My PDA is working just fine. Some of my business friends laugh at me when they see me look at my Blackberry then pull out my PDA…they are like saying, WTF you should just use one device. Then I told them my story…I was in New York, going to the airport….I put my Blackberry down on the seat to pay the driver of the car service I used…then got out, got my bag and strolled calmly into the airport…about ten steps into the airport, I realized I left my phone in the car….did I panic, nope…I just walked over to the public phone, pulled out my PDA and dialed (plz noted it took me a few minutes to dial on dial public phone it had been years since i used one)….anyway I dailed the car service, told them who I was and what I did….20 minutes later, the limo car came back to the airport and I got my phone back….the moral of this story, the data I had in the phone, was on my PDA, so I did not panic if the phone got lost or broken…I got a backup…and like this story, I use it for everything…music, eReader, calender, notes during a meetings, etc, etc…i just love it..so when I saw this story…I said to myself, finally I do not feel alone…great story..and thanks for making feel good about my aging hardware device….I hope they make some type of come back in the future….peace to all PDA lovers.”

Pocket Informant updated to include iOS calendar integration

The iPhone version of Pocket Informant has been updated to include native iOS calendar integration. This is the first proper calendering app to do this and at last we have an alternative to the very basic core iPhone calendar. I have been testing it over the weekend and so far it is performing quite well. It still needs some tweaks to improve performance, but is likely the best available now.

Proper task management is essential, but it’s only part of the picture.
Pocket Informant is a full featured PIM, so it lets you focus on everything you do in a day – not just your task list. We believe bringing your appointments and tasks together in one place is more efficient than working in isolated calendar and task management systems. Pocket Informant is designed to not force you into any one method of doing things – use our Task View as rigidly or freely as you want, using GTD principles, Franklin Covey, or your own system.

HyperDock for Mac OS

This is not smartphone related, but if you are a Mac user HyperDock is a free beta you need to take for a spin. It provides many of the better Windows 7 features and, in my opinion, makes Mac OS much quicker to use.

Ever wondered how to bring a single window to front instead of a whole application? The Window Preview bubble shows you every single window of an application just by holding the mouse on a dock item!

It can even see minimized windows and windows from other spaces and is fully drag & drop aware.

The end of the ‘Palm’ brand: does it matter?

pre central is reporting on a flier from HP which includes the words ‘HP webOS’. It is difficult to tell at this stage how permanent this is, but if it is a sign that the Palm brand is gone should it really matter?

Personally I am not too fussed by the loss of a simple brand name, but Palm says more about mobile to me than HP does which has always felt a little too corporate for my liking.

iPhone proposal in a movie theater

Here’s the story-

I proposed to my girlfriend, Vy, by writing a song and making a music video for her. We went out to see a film at our favorite movie theater and she was completely surprised once she figured out what was playing on the screen wasn’t actually an iPhone commercial.

LONG VERSION: Vy’s been wanting me to write a song for her for a very long time. I decided to write a Top 40 / Club type song because this is the type of music she likes most. Since I’m not a great singer, I found it very convenient that auto-tune is very popular in this genre. Ha! I recorded and mixed everything in Pro Tools. No loops were used. A big thank you to my brother, Casey, for doing a great job filming all the iPhone action.

This entire project took about 4 months to complete since I could only work on it when Vy was not around. It was hard coming up with so many fake excuses why I couldn’t hang out! As the project neared completion, I made phone call after phone call trying to get this played in a movie theater (with hopes of getting it played in the Carmike 20 in Oakdale which is where we had our first movie date many years ago). I lucked out when somebody got me the number to Daniel, the Carmike City Manager, who was awesome, got the OK from corporate and made it happen. I brought the DVD in so they could make sure it was suitable for showing and to do a practice run. The date was now set for Sunday, Sept. 5th at 7:35pm. It would be playing in front of the romantic comedy “Going the Distance” (which I was glad about, I was worried it might be “The Last Exorcism”!)

Wouldn’t you know it, almost immediately Vy started getting invited to BBQs, house parties and other events for Sept. 5th! Now I had to come up with a plan to make Vy want to see this movie instead doing anything else so I asked our friend Justin, who lives in Hollywood and is beginning to make appearances in film and TV, to facebook a bunch of us saying he’s appearing in a trailer for a movie called “Addicted To You” and that this trailer is showing in front of “Going the Distance” nationwide. I then requested our friend, Carlus, to respond on facebook saying “Let’s all go see Justin in the movies on Sunday! I’ll pick up tickets for everyone. Dress up and we’ll go out for my birthday afterwards”.

The plan worked great and Vy was excited to watch for our friend Justin in the trailers. We arrived that night, sat through a bunch of commercials and movie trailers and then my video started. Vy thought it was a real iPhone commercial. When in the video I said “So you want to write a song for your girlfriend”, Vy squeezed my hand and looked at me with a smile. I thought she had figured it out at that moment but she later explained she hadn’t yet firgured it out and had squeezed my hand because she wanted me to write her a song. Ha!

Once the video showed “June 17th, 2004″ she figured it out and started crying immediately, which I especially enjoyed because she has never cried at the movies but I have a number of times! At the end where the video sent the text message, Vy actually received that same text message from my phone. At that moment I got down on one knee, looked at Vy and said “Vy, you’re my best friend, I love you so much and I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?”

She said “YES!” Our friends Thomas and Kristin then came out of hiding and gave Vy a dozen roses. We all met up with more friends and went out dancing to celebrate.

Here’s the proposal-

Sony Ericsson not planning future Symbian devices

Aldo Liguori from Sony Ericsson has made the following comments regarding its future plans for Symbian- “We have no plans for the time being to develop any new products to the Symbian Foundation standard or operating system.” This is obviously a blow for Nokia, especially because SE is shifting its focus to Android. QOTD: Digital contacts?

A long time ago Palm OS gave us the ability to swap contact information via a PDA. Business cards were seen as a product of the past and we would all soon be swapping information digitally. To this day I have never swapped contact information digitally and paper business cards are still the de facto process for this. Have you ever swapped contact information digitally or are business cards still dominating this area in your experience?

Toshiba Libretto: are two screens better than one?

I have seen the Toshiba Libretto mentioned on various websites, but did not take much notice of it. It is unique in that it has 2 screens rather than 1 screen and a keyboard, but you have to ask if 2 screens are little more than a novelty? I’m not convinced, but like the innovation anyway. Thanks to Peter.

Dual-screen touch computing. The Libretto W100 is an ultra lightweight mobile internet device incorporating two 17.8cm (7”) multi-touch displays for a unique and interactive user experience that is enhanced with Toshiba’s LifeSpace software. The integrated SSD drive provides reliable storage whilst keeping weight to a minimum, the Libretto W100 weight just 840g.
