QOTD: Wi-Fi?

How much of your smartphone use is enabled by Wi-Fi? I thought about this the other day and realised that I use Wi-Fi all day at work and Wi-Fi the rest of the time at home. I am looking at over 90% unless I am away from home.

I’m right with you. Easily 90% of the time I’m on WiFi, if not more. Since I work from home, though, it only makes sense! That’s why I only have a 200 MB data plan – since I use WiFi all the time, I seldom top 100 megs in any given month.

    Same as Donald.

With wifi at home and in my place of business, I would also say over 90%. I have 500mb of cellular data per month and since contracting 9 months ago I have never gotten close to that. I only use that contract because of the airtime and messaging.

    Interesting

    iPad – 90% on wifi
Desire – 5% on wifi (main device)
Dell Streak – 20% on wifi

Stick me down as a “me too”. Since I have wifi most of the time I was happy to buy a wifi only iPad.

In a slightly different direction…..went wi-fi only on my Kindle for similar reasons.

  7. Graham says:

I get 3gb of data with my contract but I tend to use Wifi most of the time. My 3g signal strength is poor and this tends to drain the battery.

  8. Alloafan says:

Just out of interest, which is the bigger battery drain – wi-fi or 3G?

  9. Graham says:

3g uses more juice on Android devices and I think it’s the same for the iPhone. Don’t know about other devices.

  10. Philippa says:

I find wifi is more of a battery guzzler, however if I’m in an area that swaps rapidly between 2g and 3g signals that has a very detrimental effect.

  11. Joel L says:

I find that wifi is uses more battery on the 9700. However, if I am on a weak signal, the constant searching for 3G uses significantly more power. For this reason, I use wifi to enable UMA to get a great signal in the office and at home.

    Shaun,

I’m heavy into wifi too and actually feel that dramatically when I travel overseas (which I do frequently). I hardly use my iphone when overseas due to extreme data costs. It makes me realise how much my iphone “needs” to be connected in order to be useful.

Working from home the rest of the time makes wifi always available.
