Evernote raises $20 million
Evernote has just managed to nab a further $20 million to add to the $9 million left over from last year. Apparently all of the money will go back into the product, a product which is already very, very good. Good times ahead…
Today’s announcement of our $20 million series “C” funding led by Sequoia Capital means that we now have the resources to significantly expand and improve our service in ways that would have taken years to achieve organically. We’ll build more features, add more devices, fix more bugs, expand into more countries, and make Evernote indispensable to more types of users (including corporate and educational folk).
We’ll take this $20 million, combine it with the more than $9 million that we still have from last year’s “B” round, and put it all back into the product. Plus, a Super Bowl ad. Plus, better lunch for the office. Plus, a ticket to the International Space Station. Minus, the Super Bowl ad and the space station ticket.
Roelof Botha from Sequoia will be joining the Evernote team as an advisor and board observer. Roelof helped build a bunch of great Internet companies, including PayPal, YouTube, Eventbrite, Unity, Meebo and Xoom. We’re frankly blown away just to appear on the same list as those guys.

RIM Co-CEO on Apple’s distortion field
The fallout continues over Steve Job’s comments yesterday. I’m not convinced it isn’t just better to ignore them as nothing more than childish ranting…
Here’s what RIMs Co-CEO, Balsillie had to say (more at CrackBerry) “For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7″ tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple’s Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.”
Mobile Phone Showdown: Android and Symbian vs. Apple
If you want objectivity, which is often severely lacking when it comes to smartphones, take a read of Mobile Phone Showdown: Android and Symbian vs. Apple. UPDATE: Just read the whole article through- it’s not objective at all, but highly subjective.
Apple may have the flash and the looks, but Nokia and Android are doing it right – creating Mobile for the Masses. Around the world you see Nokia and Android everywhere. From free to $500 devices, you have the choice and the chance to get what you want when it comes to Nokia and Android. And for $800 you can get a tablet that only syncs with iTunes, doesn’t support Flash and limits what you can do with it. Nokia and Android are the “People’s Mobile Devices”. With the masses comes the marketable audience. It’s just simple maths.

Oceanhouse Media Announces New Halloween Themed eBooks for iPhone & iPad
It’s that time of year- time to scare your kids with your iPad! Oceanhouse Media, Inc. announced the release of two new Halloween themed eBooks for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The classic Dr. Seuss short-story What was I Scared of? is now available on the App Store for only $1.99. And one of the all-time best selling children’s Halloween books, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano, is now available as an eBook for only $2.99. Both universal apps can be used on the iPad and iPhone for no additional charge. These apps also include special high-resolution graphics for the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G Retina displays.
What was I Scared of? was authored in 1961 by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as the beloved Dr. Seuss. Delivering a timeless message about fear and acceptance, the tale begins with a character who repeatedly meets up with an empty pair of pale-green pants. He is initially afraid of the pants, which are able to stand on their own despite the lack of a wearer. However, when he screams for help and the pants also start to cry, he realizes that “They were just as scared as I!” Eventually, the empty pants and the main character choose to no longer be in fear of one another and become good friends.

Steve Jobs fragments
Steve Jobs had a lot to say on the quarterly earnings call yesterday including “Twitter client, Twitter Deck [actually Tweetdeck], recently launched their app for Android. They reported that they had to contend with more than 100 different versions of Android software on 244 different handsets. The multiple hardware and software iterations present developers with a daunting challenge. Many Android apps work only on selected Android handsets running selected Android versions. And this is for handsets that have been shipped less than 12 months ago. Compare this with iPhone, where there are two versions of the software, the current and the most recent predecessor to test against.”
Today, Iain Dodsworth from TweetDeck had the following to say on Twitter- “Did we at any point say it was a nightmare developing on Android? Errr nope, no we didn’t. It wasn’t.”
He also said “We only have 2 guys developing on Android TweetDeck so that shows how small an issue fragmentation is.”
So, Apple has its best ever quarter. Apple is doing remarkably well in a challenging environment. Steve Jobs continues to display traits that are unnecessary and often times inaccurate. What a (insert your own swear word)!

Design an eBook cover: win £200
Some time ago I released a short book called My Digital Generation which explored growing up and witnessing the growth of technology from the 1970′s until today. Since then I have been gradually adding to the book and it is now four times longer than it originally was. Once I have finished proof reading and tidying it up I intend to release it again as an iBook and likely in other forms.
The problem is that the original cover (above) is quite dull and thus I need a new one. All you need to do is submit your design for an eBook cover to shaun (at) mailstm.co.uk by December 1st 2010 to be in with a chance to win £200. The winner will be chosen by December 3rd and payment can be made in a variety of ways. All entries need to be at least 600 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high. Good luck!
A brief history of a 40 year old’s trials and tribulations with the digital world we know today, and his experience of the digital past.
“When I was very young we used to have an outside toilet and I remember being scared that a big spider or rat would come and visit while I was taking care of business yet at no time did I think it odd that the toilet was in the garden. My brother and I used to have our baths in the kitchen sink and again it all seemed perfectly normal. We used to play in the street because there were hardly any cars and when the man who lived a few doors down picked up the local children to let them sit in the back of his open bed truck while he drove down the hill no one shouted “paedophile!” at him…” “…I remember snow very vividly and being able to build a Dad sized snowman and then roll his head down the hill just before the global warming melted him- in those days global warming was called the Sun…”

QOTD: Out of 20?
Getting BIG content to a smartphone: how to use it and where to find it
Smartphones are used more and more to catch up on the content you have not had time to read during the day and there are various tools to help you do this. Instapaper is one of the most popular examples for the iPhone and iPad and has quickly become one of my most used apps- almost every day I grab some content via the ‘read later’ bookmark on my Mac or via Twitter and I now have a long list of interesting content still waiting to be read. The offline web can be a ‘very’ powerful tool in the right hands and used properly you will be digesting more knowledge than you thought possible.

EverPaper (Android Market) is an app that will let you add content to your Instapaper account and thus bring the same experience even without an official Instapaper app. It works extremely well and has many options available and once tried will be forever used. InstaFetch is another alternative worth checking out which is free.
If you have a BlackBerry you can use this simple hack to add a menu item that lets you send any content to your Instapaper account when you find it. This doesn’t get around the fact that you won’t be reading the articles on your BlackBerry (usually people send from desktop to mobile), but half a solution is better than none at all.
I can’t find an Instapaper client for Symbian. Add a comment if you know of one that works well.
webOS is a similar story as far as Instapaper goes, but some people have tried. The lack of public APIs is the problem here although the effort continues on the lesser developed platforms.
So, there are options for most mobile and desktop platforms, but where are the best places to grab interesting content?
Instapaper itself stores many interesting articles which are selected based on quality rather than quantity. The Browser is a website specialising in quality content which is updated regularly with sometimes very long articles that will keep you reading for upwards of 30 minutes.
Long Reads publishes links to long articles on Twitter and some of these are well worth checking out. If you use a Twitter client such as Twitterific you can add them to your Instapaper account with one click.
longform.org takes another approach and lets you automatically receive a new long article every week if you find pressing the ‘read later’ button too tiring.
If you know of further sources feel free to add your links via a comment, but it is safe to say that the offline mobile web is gaining in popularity just when many thought that its days were numbered. I am a big fan of the concept and always have been since the days of Plucker.

An International Comparison of Cell Phone Plans and Prices
A new study by the New America Foundation has found that Americans and Canadians pay a high price for their mobile phone usage, but that the UK is also quite high on some tariffs. It would be expected for America and Canada because of the large geography and relatively small populations, but the UK is knee deep in network providers and is tiny. Makes for interesting reading though.
Cell phones are intertwined with our lives no matter where we are in the world. The New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative (OTI) recently completed a survey on the costs and types of mobile cell phone packages available to consumers around the world. With recent policy debates over Bill Shock and Consumer Disclosure, this study provides useful insight into business models prevalent in several key countries. Plans in some countries provide different offerings and bundled services for students, professionals, family, corporate and special needs consumers. In other countries it appears that a significantly more competitive market than what exists in the United States has resulted in innovative offerings and lower pricing for consumers. In contrast, in countries where competition is less and regulation more lax, higher prices and a limited choice of plans prevail.

Give me a pen and I will struggle
If I have to write copious notes in a meeting these days I really do struggle; my hand gets tired and my handwriting quickly turns into a meaningless scrawl. I do wonder if one day the art of writing by hand will be lost and if it is that would be a sad day. How Handwriting Trains the Brain explains the reasons why handwriting is good in more ways than you may think.
Ask preschooler Zane Pike to write his name or the alphabet, then watch this 4-year-old’s stubborn side kick in. He spurns practice at school and tosses aside workbooks at home. But Angie Pike, Zane’s mom, persists, believing that handwriting is a building block to learning.
Wendy Bounds discusses the fading art of handwriting, pointing out that new research shows it can benefit children’s motor skills and their ability to compose ideas and achieve goals throughout life.
She’s right. Using advanced tools such as magnetic resonance imaging, researchers are finding that writing by hand is more than just a way to communicate. The practice helps with learning letters and shapes, can improve idea composition and expression, and may aid fine motor-skill development.
It’s not just children who benefit. Adults studying new symbols, such as Chinese characters, might enhance recognition by writing the characters by hand, researchers say. Some physicians say handwriting could be a good cognitive exercise for baby boomers working to keep their minds sharp as they age.
Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
The bits in bold say it all really. Thanks to Trevor.
CUPERTINO, California—October 18, 2010—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended September 25, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $12.21 billion and net quarterly profit of $2.53 billion, or $2.77 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.9 percent compared to 41.8 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 57 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
Apple sold 3.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 27 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.05 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 11 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.
“We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings—both all-time records for Apple,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year.”
“We’re thrilled with the performance and strength of our business, generating almost $5.7 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $23 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.80.”
