QOTD: Your mobile highlight of the year?

What was your mobile highlight of the year? For me it would have to be the iPad- it came late to me, but got there in the end. The Amazon Kindle is brilliant as well.

Short Takes: iThoughtsHD

Short Takes are brief reviews of iPhone and iPad Apps that have caught my fancy. I’ll give a brief description and tell you why I like them. I’m not going to give ratings. I would rate all of the Apps I’m reviewing a 4 or 5 out of 5. They are stable and well made, at least in my opinion, provide good value, again, in my opinion, and get good developer support.

iThoughtsHD

iThoughtsHD is a mind mapping tool. If you want the details of mind mapping, check out Wikipedia. And follow some of the links because there are lots of approaches. The basic idea is to record your thoughts on something, for example, a project you need to do. And not just the thoughts, but their inter-relationships. Mind maps usually look like a bunch of interconnected ovals with text in them. They are grouped around a central theme. The ovals relate to each other usually in a hierarchical fashion.

Let’s say that you have a project that you have to map out. You know you have lots of things to do but you’re not quite sure how they relate to each other or in what order you need to do them. And there are all sorts of little things that really aren’t attached to anything yet. You could write it all down on paper, many, many times. Or you could use an outliner and move items up and down and in and out. Or you could use a mind mapping tool and get a more visual view of what you need to do. If it were on an iPad, you could move things from place to place by touch and drag.

I admit that I liked the idea of mind mapping from the first time I saw it. However, there was no way I’d plan something using a mind map on paper. And the computer programs at the time were clumsy and impersonal. So I filed the idea away and forgot about it.

Then one day, I saw an article about mind mapping on one of the iPad Web sites I peruse. Maybe this could finally be useful for my way of working. There were a few “lite” versions I tried and while the basics were okay, something was lacking. Maybe it was ease of use, maybe it was power, or maybe the interface didn’t suit me.

In my delving into mind mapping tools on the iPad, one App was always at the top – iThoughtsHD. However, there was no free version to try out, and the price at the time was $7.99Cdn (now $9.99Cdn). So I read as much as I could about it. I read the Web site and the developer’s blog, from which I learned that there’s been a constant flow of new versions and upgrades. There’s also an iPhone version. In fact that’s where iThoughts started. There are also a few mind mapping sites where iThoughtsHD also came out on top.

Everything I read was positive, so I took a leap of faith and purchased it. If I say so myself, it was a very smart move.

iThoughtsHD makes it easy. It’s quite intuitive. Touch the + to create a new map. Set the basic parameters using the options gear. Global options are in the Settings App. Double tap to attach a new topic to the current selected topic. Or use the buttons to create a child or a sibling. Touch a topic to select it. Double touch an existing topic to edit the text. The i(nfo) button lets you customize a topic’s appearance and add an icon or a note.

There are options to align topics or to keep everything aligned automatically. Touch and drag to move topics around. Or touch, hold, and drag to move topics from one parent topic to another.

There are lots of other tools to make the maps meaningful. You can add callouts and group a set of topics. You can also show relationships between different topics outside of the usual hierarchy, so that the map can take on a networked structure rather than just a hierarchy.

You can export as a PDF or export and import in many other mind map application formats so that you can use the maps on your Mac or PC. I’ve tried this using Freemind on my Mac and it worked flawlessly.

I mentioned up front that any of the Apps I review will have good developer support. Craig Scott, the creator of iThoughtsHD, is one of the best. He is very responsive and very open to ideas.

I’ve used iThoughtsHD on 3 projects so far, 2 at work. It saved me considerable time. In fact there was one project where I needed to map out a sequence of events. Using iThoughtsHD, I was able to see that the same groupings of events occurred from different points in the sequence. I doubt it would have been as obvious using an outliner or paper.

If you need this sort of tool, get the best. In my humble opinion that’s iThoughtsHD.

COTD: The digital magazine experience

Today’s comment of the day comes from Alloafan on the subject of digital magazines- “I wonder if the lack of differentiation is why it doesn’t feel like a magazine has been read. We’re used to physical differences from magazine to magazine, newspaper to newspaper. In the digital world – take blogs as an example – we’re used to the main differentiation being in the thoughts expressed, not the way they’re packaged. And so we have no issue with that. But with newspapers and, even more so, magazines we’re accustomed to the physical aspects being a big part of the experience, especially the ability to ‘flick’ and scan.”

Skype v FaceTime: Skype is winning

The update of Skype for iOS is impressive, but many will not have seen the true ramifications of what is happening here. Apple reinvented the mobile video calling industry with FaceTime and effectively made good on the promises others made many years ago, but overnight the competition has come in and pulled the rug from under it.

Skype for iOS allows video calling between iOS devices over 3G and Wi-Fi. That is the first advantage. It also allows video calls with people on Macs and PCs. That is the second advantage. Now, consider that there are already Skype offerings for Android, Symbian, the 3 network, TVs, Linux and much more and it doesn’t take long to see how inclusive the Skype service could be.

If the apps / services for each platform were updated and offered a level set of features this would make it a service that is, like a year or so before, difficult to compete with again. Apple has offered up millions of iOS and non-iOS users who will be happy to try Skype for the first time now and with development in will come a huge number of Android and Symbian users.

Maybe Apple will allow FaceTime over 3G in January, but if it’s still just an iOS service it could suddenly seem a little too segregated for some.

Samsung Galaxy Media Player: The Android iPod Touch

Samsung has announced it’s intention to sell the Samsung Galaxy Media Player which is to the Galaxy S what the iPod Touch is to the iPhone. Besides the lack of phone functionality there is a smaller Super Clear LCD screen in place of the Super AMOLED in the Galaxy S, but almost everything else is the same.

It will have access to the Android Market and Samsung Apps, but I wonder if there is a surprise around the corner for those who want to buy and rent videos. Just something a little birdie told me…

7 trillion texts to be sent in 2011

According to ABI 7 trillion text messages will be sent globally in 2011. There is a caveat though in that it counts instant messages, MMS and mobile email as a text message so you could say that 7 trillion text messages will not be sent in 2011…

iPad magazine sales dropping

As the iPad continues to sell by the very large bucketload, some surprising news has come out regarding iPad magazine sales- they seem to be dropping across the board.

WWD has posted full details and the following paragraph sums up the situation- “Many magazines that are available on the iPad, such as Esquire, People and The New Yorker, have not posted their digital single-issue sales to the ABC. But Vanity Fair sold 8,700 digital editions of its November issue, down from its average of about 10,500 for the August, September and October issues. Glamour sold 4,301 digital editions in September, but sales dropped 20 percent in October and then another 20 percent, to 2,775, in November. GQ’s November edition sold 11,000 times, which was its worst performance since April (when the iPad was released) and represents a slight decline from its average digital sales of 13,000 between May and October.”

I recently read an issue of T3 on my iPad and it was a brilliant experience. However, afterwards I did not feel like I had actually read a magazine. Strange, but true.

QOTD: Mobile news?

Today’s question comes from Simon. What is your favourite/preferred RSS reader or do you look at specific news apps such as BBC or Guardian? I use Reeder mainly but flit between a few different readers.

One trick ponies

I have to admit that since receiving my Kindle on Christmas Day I have quickly fallen in love with it. This is surprising because I tend to prefer objects that are capable of multiple tasks and that display all of the wonders of modern technology in the smallest space possible. The Kindle is a one trick pony that does eReading and that’s it, but boy does it do it well.

I can’t quite say what makes it such a good eReader, but there are many things that bring it nearer to a book than a smartphone, Android tablet or the iPad could ever do. The screen looks like paper, the battery life is immense and the lightness and size means that it really can be carried anywhere. I wrote about this subject before Christmas and the following paragraph comes back to my mind- “I do agree with the reader’s comment and in particular with this one from another reader- “A novel is an immersive experience; the last thing the reader wants is to be interrupted.” That is a point I had not thought of before. Of course you can turn on Airplane Mode, but then you have to consider calendar alarms etc. and all of a sudden it doesn’t feel so much like a reading experience.”

As I said I cannot quite put my finger on it, but the Kindle has proved to be a much, much better eReader than the iPad for me and one that I will be using for all of my eBooks from now on. Just need to buy a case with a light on it for reading in bed…

Nokia Windows Phone concept

Here is a very simplistic concept video of a Nokia phone running Windows Phone. There is still something special about the classic Nokia design and the thought of a Nokia phone running this OS certainly appeals to me.
