BlackBerry PlayBook delayed?

It seems that the BlackBerry PlayBook could be delayed because of battery problems. This is surprising because many tablets have really good batteries and BlackBerry’s have historically also provided excellent battery performance. The Clove Blog is also reporting that the release date could be March 2011 which is a long time in this market. I guess at least it gives RIM the chance to see what iPad 2 will offer…

Can your phone camera do this?

The Nokia N8 has comes in for much criticism over the past few months, but few of us can complain about the camera. The first batch of Nokia Creative N8 Photo award winners have been announced and the selection is impressive indeed. And no, my smartphone camera cannot match these standards.

Images of the X10 mini successor emerge

Some images of the Sony Ericsson X10 mini successor have emerged on a Chinese forum. Android 2.3 appears to be onboard and if they are real, I am surprised that SE is continuing with this form factor. The X10 mini was a good phone, but I would have expected it to be a one off novelty effort.

QOTD: How many angry apps?

Simon is posing today’s question. How many apps do you have on your device, and how many do you use in anger (by that I mean at least daily)? I’ve got a measly 71 apps on my iPhone (a lot more purchased not installed) but use probably only half a dozen daily. Mail, ICal, Messages, Twitter, Reeder, App Store, Contacts, Safewallet and Facebook.

What happens if your new mobile network is no good?

The rights of the consumer when joining a new mobile network are sketchy at best, but at least 3 offers a 14 day money back guarantee. However, check out the full terms below and in particular the bits in bold-

“If you are a new 3 customer and for some reason you are not happy with 3, you can return your mobile and original boxed accessories, including any additional free promotional items you may have received with your order, along with your proof of purchase, within 14 days of receipt to us and we will give you a full refund.

In order to be eligible to return your mobile under the 14-Day returns policy you must not have used your handset to make or receive calls or texts, take photos, or download content.

Similarly, if your mobile has been damaged since you received it, this guarantee will not cover you.

This does not affect your statutory rights.”

So, if you buy a handset from 3 and find out that the network is no good where you live and work you can get a refund providing you haven’t actually used the phone to find out the problem in the first place. Is it just me?

Technology still catches me out

When I first picked up my main Christmas present from my wife, the Amazon Kindle, I had a bit of a shock. The screen had a sticker on the front of it which I thought was a printed sticker detailing the Kindle’s features. When I removed it I realised that it was a clear screen protector and that the text and images I was looking at were on the screen itself. It’s a silly little story, but an example of 2 things; technology can still catch me out at times and the Kindle screen is unbelievably good.

HTC makes sense of ‘Sense’

Drew Bamford from HTC has outlined to Forbes where Sense should be heading in the future, and that future looks set to include magazines, books, music and video. This is, of course, what all mobile platforms need to compete with iOS and it seems as though HTC realises this.

To date, that “cool stuff” has mostly centered on helping users that have lost or misplaced their phones. HTC device owners can remotely locate their phones using HTCSense.com or back up their text messages. In the future, however, Sense will focus more on “getting cool content onto phones,” says Bamford.

That content will include everything from books, magazines and newspapers to music and video, says Bamford. The books and periodicals will be part of a “reader application” that has been released in Europe and is slated to come to the U.S. In Europe, the app is a partnership with Kobo, Borders Books’ eBooks platform, which allows applicable books to be read on HTC phones.

Are You the Customer or the Product?

Here’s an enlightening piece by Elia called Are You the Customer or the Product? which looks at how free software generates income, usually with your information.

“A customer emailed me last evening and asked me to justify the price of powerOne for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. At first, I have to admit, I was a little insulted but as I thought about it more I decided it was a legitimate question. In this day and age where every software product seems to be free, why should he pay?

And my answer was pretty straight forward: if you aren’t paying than you aren’t the customer, you are the product.”

iPad dominates holiday tablet sales

Brian Blair from Wedge Partners has concluded that the iPad dominated recent holiday sales with significant consumer demand almost everywhere. Slight more controversially, he also stated that “Even with a handful of tablet competitors hitting the market, the iPad remained the only game in town in our holiday checks largely because many of the tablets hitting the market are junk for lack of a better word,” he wrote. “They are underpowered, poorly constructed and largely not ready for prime time.”

They are not all junk because the Galaxy Tab is quite good, but it would be safe to say that the myriad of really bad budget Android tablets is tarnishing the image of others and making the iPad shine brighter in many people’s eyes. More at Digital Daily.

The mixed up smartphone market

It really is a mixed up smartphone market if the following from DigiTimes is anything to go by- “In 2010, Nokia shipped the most handsets, Samsung Electronics posted the highest revenues and Apple was the most profitable, accounting for 40% of worldwide profit in the handset market, according to a report by Chinese language Economic Daily News, citing statistics from Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC).”

The Nokia 3210 returns

Lekki is now selling the Nokia 3210 for 85 Euros. Yes, it is the Nokia 3210 from the 1990′s and it is overpriced of course, but am I the only one who thinks it looks as good today as it always did?

Grimm’s Rapunzel for iPhone and iPad: a stunning storybook experience

Grimm’s Rapunzel is a new 3D storybook from Ideal Binary which is way better than any of the other 3D storybooks I have seen to date. It is currently only £1.19 / $1.99 for the universal version and a new benchmark for kids apps. Check out the video below and see if you are as impressed as my 6 year-old daughter has been-
