COTD: It’s amazing and it just keeps getting better

Graham has written today’s comment of the day- “Smartphones are both a hobby and a tool. I have always loved technology since I was a child. I fondly remember those primitive tennis games we used to play on an old black and white TV. Space invaders down the pub: how brilliant was that? It seemed amazing at the time!

In my job as a vicar smartphones are incredibly useful. I bought my first Palm because I lost my diary and was really stuffed. Now I find it difficult to live without. Obviously I could go back to paper if I really had to but organisation is so much easier electronically.

The other main use for me is Bible software. When I was away from home I used to take English, Greek and Hebrew bibles along with Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. They were big books that together weighed a ton. My wife used to object when I wanted to take them on holiday. Now I have an entire library in my pocket. It’s amazing and it just keeps getting better.”

App Inventor now available for anyone to ruin the Android Market

Am I the only one who believes that the availability of Android App Inventor to anyone is a bad move? At this particular moment we are safe from a slew of sub-standard to far too basic apps, but Google has answered an FAQ with this little nugget- “Currently there are technical limitations preventing an App Inventor app from being uploaded to the Android Market, but we are actively working to resolve this.”

There are already many, many terrible developers on the Android Market and the iTunes App Store and this makes it more difficult for the really good ones to be heard above the noise. This invention by Google will potentially make that worse, unless they are segregated.

Windows Phone 7 showing business promise

A recent study, albeit only of 250 small, medium and large business, has pointed to some promising news for Windows Phone 7. 46% of those surveyed plan to support the OS in 2011 with 15% already doing so. Only Android, BlackBerry and iOS also figured in the results with no single OS dominating. Looks like there will be a lot of business up for grabs if the dire predictions for BlackBerry come true.

  • Mobility is becoming less of a privilege in the workplace and more of an employee’s right. As such, the pendulum is swinging toward companies subsidizing both voice and data services less. In fact, that trend fell some 10 to 15 percent from January 2010 to December 2010.
  • Businesses are settling in on supporting at least four different mobile platforms: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and surprisingly, Windows Phone 7. Android, not surprisingly, saw the biggest jump in support from January 2010 to December 2010. Support for Android increased to 42 percent in December, up from 19 percent in January.
  • When it comes to 2011 and what platforms enterprises will support, Windows Phone 7 ranks high, jumping from 15 percent planning to support the platform today to 46 percent in 2011.
  • No one platform will dominate the enterprise.
  • When it comes to what the enterprise will allow employees to do on their personally-owned mobile devices, social networking was high on the list at more than 80 percent. That means every organization is entering a delicate balance between allowing employees to do what they want with their devices while still imposing restrictions to protect the enterprise and company time.

Four new HD games at Ovi Store

NokiaPhones has pointed out the release of four new HD games for Symbian. The four games are no HD, Assassins Creed HD, Real Golf 2011 HD and Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD and look quite good, but Real Golf 2011 doesn’t quite look as graphically realistic as it does on iOS.

Yesterday Ovi Blog announced they will offer several HD mobile games soon, probably by the end of this week. I guess many users are waiting for Angry Birds Seasons, which certainly will be available at Ovi Store in the next few days. From other HD games I have to single out Uno HD, Assassins Creed HD, Real Golf 2011 HD and Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD.

Official PlayStation app coming to Android and iOS

An official PlayStation app will be released by Sony for Android and iOS devices very soon. In what some will see as a curious development, users will be able to check their trophies, read PlayStation related news and do all sorts of other things. This makes sense for Android because of the PlayStation phone, but to include iOS as well is more inclusive than I for one would have expected.

The first version (1.0) will be available in the following countries: UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands.

We are already working on the next version that will support most SCEE countries and languages, and will also let you comment on PlayStation.Blog.

There are tons more features we are planning to bring to this app in the next few months so keep an eye on the PlayStation.Blog for further announcements early next year.

Nokia files patent infringement complaints against Apple in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands

Nokia is back in the lawsuit game and has filed a series of complaints against Apple in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced it has filed claims in the UK High Court, Dusseldorf and Mannheim District Courts in Germany and the District Court of the Hague, Netherlands, alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in many of its products sold in these countries, including iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

“These actions add 13 further Nokia patents to the 24 already asserted against Apple in the US International Trade Commission and the Delaware and Wisconsin Federal courts,” said Paul Melin, vice president, Intellectual Property at Nokia. “The Nokia inventions protected by these patents include several which enable compelling user experiences. For example, using a wiping gesture on a touch screen to navigate content, or enabling access to constantly changing services with an on-device app store, both filed more than ten years before the launch of the iPhone.”

Nokia’s filing in the UK covers 4 Nokia patents related to touch user interface, on-device app stores, signal noise suppression and modulator structures.

Nokia’s filing in Dusseldorf, Germany covers 7 Nokia patents related to touch user interface, antenna structures, messaging functionality and chipsets.

Nokia’s filing in Mannheim, Germany covers 5 Nokia patents related to on-device app stores, caller ID, display illumination and the integration of multiple radios.

Nokia’s filing in the Hague, Netherlands covers 2 Nokia patents related to signal noise suppression and data card functionality.

None of the asserted patents have been declared essential to any wireless communication standard.

During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry’s strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with around 11,000 patent families.  Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia’s strong patent position.

The LG Optimus 2X can connect wirelessly to any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatible digital device such as HD TVs for a console-like gaming experience taking full advantage of the phone’s HDMI mirroring, accelerometer and gyro sensor. The smartphone also includes both rear- and front-facing cameras, microSD memory expandability, Micro-USB port and a hefty 1500mAh battery.

The LG Optimus 2X will be available in Korea next month with countries in Europe and Asia to follow. How the iPad transformed my mobile habits

My iOS experience consists of a first generation iPod Touch, which was followed by an iPhone 3GS. I was extremely happy with both devices, I witnessed the birth of the App Store and saw the operating system improve iteration after iteration. After spending a year with the 3GS, I was halfway my contract and sold the iPhone in favour of a Blackberry Bold 9700. Looking back, I regret the step. I said goodbye to decent apps and games, gaining a hardware keyboard and better battery life in the process.

You might wonder where this is going, since the word “iPad” has yet to be mentioned. Well, I used my Bold primarily for voice and email, since its browsing experience is downright appalling. The iPad caught my interest later on, but it wasn’t until July that it was available in the Netherlands. Upon playing with the iPad, I felt the typical gadget craving that everybody here will be familiar with. I did what I had to do in order to get one, and I splurged on the 64 GB WiFi model. Five months later, I have yet to regret my purchase. A day hasn’t passed by without using the iPad.

I bought the iPad with a number of tasks in mind, mostly browsing the web, reading magazines and ebooks and playing games. I still use it a lot for the activities mentioned, and I find the experience very satisfying. But nowadays, I also use the PIM apps extensively. I never had a real good overview of my calendar on my PDA’s and smartphones, while the iPad’s built-in calendar gives me exactly what I need, in a gorgeous interface. The software keyboard surprised me as well, I type a lot on it – and pretty fast too. I do most of my writing in Pages, having never seen such a full-fledged mobile word processor with such user-friendly controls.

For the above reasons, the iPad sits in my bag where my laptop used to be. In fact, my 13 inch MacBook has left the house only once since I picked Apple’s tablet up. A number of tasks remain unsuited for the iPad, like doing data intensive stuff (I’m not even going to mention editing images). Sometimes I need more horsepower, or the ability to have multiple screens open at the same time. But that’s also where the iPad excels at: focussing on one thing at a time. Like writing this piece, without any distractions.

Every morning before leaving for work, I double check my bag to make sure I haven’t forgotten my beloved tablet. That is, because the weight is hardly noticeable. Carrying a power adapter around town is also thankfully a thing of the past, with amazing battery life. Even games that used to suck the life out of my iTouch/iPhone can’t get the iPad down. And I have loads of them installed. You name it, I’ve got it.

And that’s where my Blackberry comes into play: I got everything back that I missed from my iPhone, but bigger and better. Speaking about bigger, I watch Shaun struggle on PDA 24/7 from time to time with the iPad’s form factor. I completely understand him, as his mobile activities revolve around the smartphone in his pocket. That’s simply what works best for Shaun, and it worked best for me for the last few years. Until now, that is. Owning a “boring” smartphone and an fun to use tablet computer means that I use the iPad for nearly everything, except for making calls and sending messages on the fly.  Where I used to do everything on a device that fits in my hand.  I’m used to carrying a backpack, so the iPad is always with me. And that’s why the iPad has changed most of my mobile habits.

My two-year contract is finally up for renewal this summer. That means I will be getting the fifth generation iPhone, returning to the phone that is a true joy to use. I reckon I won’t be using it as much as I did with my 3GS, as I’m inclined to grab its bigger brother for a lot of tasks. One major advantage of owning both devices is the cloud synchronisation that I have with my MobileMe account. Adding an appointment on my iPhone will push it instantly to my iPad (whenever the iPad is online). With this in mind, iOS will be even more of a joy to use for me.

    COTD: 2011

Steve has come up with today’s comment of the today- “What do I predict for 2011? I believe we’re in an unusal ‘crisis’ year, with incremental changes to the iPhone (*gasp* maybe shipped also in white?) and iPad (cameras; *yawn*); but for Nokia, RIM, windows, and HP/Palm we’ll find out whether they have traction in the new webkit smartphone era, or whether they are only going to make commodity products on their way out. Motorola, Samsung, and HTC seem to be ‘hired’ guns that will continue to make good products no matter what the platform, but can they make cutting-edge products at a price-point with a decent market share while letting them still make money? If we experience a tough world economy, we could see 3 or even 4 of these companies exit the smartphone market (either quickly like the MS Kin or via a merger).”

3 breaks the trend and offers ‘unlimited’ data

3 is now offering a unlimited data plan called ‘The One Plan’. When they say unlimited, they actually mean unlimited and are doing away with the unfair fair usage plans currently offered by much of the competition. This is surprising in an industry where more and more money is being spent just to keep up with demand, but let’s not complain…

From now on, we’ll be removing the 1GB data allowance currently available on The One Plan and replacing it with something completely different.

We’re calling it All-you-can-eat Data, and it’s not like anything you’ll see from anyone else. Unlike other data plans, there are no restrictions and no crafty ‘fair usage’ policies containing hidden data caps. We’re leaving behind the ‘old mobile’ world of limits and allowances in favour of a new world that gives you the freedom to use your smartphone to do everything it was designed for without the worry of cost.

Our new world has no data restrictions, you can use as much as you want and we’ll never charge you a penny more.

If you’ve been to all-you-can-eat restaurants before, you’ll already be familiar how this works. You pay once, you get as much as you want the first time round, and you can still keep coming back for more. And yes, if you want to use your phone as a dongle (also known as tethering) then you absolutely can.
