Time to move on

PDA-247 WILL NO LONGER BE UPDATED. PLEASE VISIT WWW.LOSTINMOBILE.COM FOR DAILY NEWS, REVIEWS AND COMMENTARY ON ALL THINGS MOBILE. Please remember to change your links as soon as possible.

At some point in the future the PDA-247 domain will auto-forward to Lost In Mobile. ALL content from PDA-247 has been migrated to Lost In Mobile. The new site is much faster than the old one and provides much more scope for expansion in the future. There are some small tweaks still to be done on Lost In Mobile, but it is 95% there and should provide a stable environment for your daily mobile discussions.

PDA-247 started life back in 2002 as Clie World and over time went through a series of names. The idea behind Lost In Mobile is that it is generic and descriptive enough to last well into the future. The word ‘PDA’ is not in common use anymore, but ‘mobile’ covers smartphones, mobile phones, tablets and whatever else will come in the future.

Thanks for reading PDA-247. It isn’t dead, it’s just different now.

Lost In Mobile: Beta Testing

The days of PDA-247 are numbered… PDA-247 is a large site and currently holds more than 6,000 news articles, reviews and thoughts. The current setup simply isn’t working well and it’s time to move away from WordPress and a standard host- 247 is close to hitting traffic and memory limits in 3 separate areas.

I have decided to take the opportunity to change (for the final time!) the name of the site to something more generic and Lost In Mobile is the chosen one. It’s for those of you who are lost in the greatness of the modern mobile experience and for those of you who are lost for a moment and need some help. Lost In Mobile will cater for everyone.

I need your help though.

Please take a trip over to www.lostinmobile.com and try out as much of the site as you can. I want your views on how the comments system works, how easy you find it to navigate and if you think it is faster than PDA-247 (it should be 2 to 3 times faster).

Bear in mind that some work still needs to be done such as consistency on the fonts across the site, the logo and some other tweaks are still needed. I have tried to make the design as similar to PDA-247 as possible so it should feel familiar.

No articles will be posted on 247 over the weekend, they will be on L.I.M. to give you the chance to use it properly.

The Sharp AQUOS

Sharp has announced the AQUOS which is a clamshell Android 2.3 smartphone with a 16 Megapixel camera. The rest of the specs are quite good and even infrared is included, but I have to say that it looks like a clamshell for the sake of making a clamshell to me.

From MobileCrunch- “If you thought Android and clamshell handsets won’t fit, think again: Sharp today introduced [JP] the so-called AQUOS PHONE THE HYBRID 007SH, a flip phone running on Android 2.3. It’s the first of its kind (at least by a major company), but that’s not all the device has to offer.”

Hidden Object games: so basic, so good

There have been many iOS game sales recently and by chance I came across Big City Adventure: New York City for a mere £0.59 ($0.99). I didn’t read the description properly and was annoyed with myself for buying a hidden object game. I am not 5 years old, I want to play in-depth strategy games that stretch my mind and not spend my time looking for hidden objects in a picture. I may as well have bought a word search game or a child’s colouring book!

I have spent a great deal of my time looking for hidden objects.

Big City Adventure is a huge time taker. The premise is simple and involves playing mini-games such as jigsaw puzzles to progress to the next part of town. When you reach the next part of town you have to find a series of hidden objects in a picture. This picture can be zoomed in to get a much closer look which involves lots of scrolling around and blurred graphics, but what appear to be failures at first quickly add to the fascination of the game. The first few plays are incredibly frustrating because it feels like looking at a meaningless picture with no logic involved, but over time it all falls into place and the process becomes very, very addictive. Objects are hidden inside pictures that pop up when you click a specific part of the main picture and others are found using cryptic clues. There are bonus coins for extra points, clues and other rewards and you gain extra points for finishing each level quickly. Think of it as a visual crossword and you won’t go far wrong.

So far I have progressed through 15 levels which leave 45 to complete, plus 45 mini-games along the way. It has taken me a week to clear these 15 and so I can expect at least another 3 weeks to complete the whole game, but the pictures get harder as the level numbers increase so the remaining time may also increase.

I simply cannot explain why hunting around pictures for objects is so addictive and why it is taking so much of my time, but the implementation is superb and everything from the clues to the clever placement of the objects come together to create a relaxing, yet at times frustrating, experience that I will be playing for some time to come. Big Fish Games has released many titles in this genre and I can see myself eventually buying all of them. I am completely and utterly addicted to the genre and these are the best implementations I have seen yet. If you are unsure, try one of the Lite titles and you will see what I mean. Prepare to be addicted…

Latest Gartner figures: as Radiohead said, no surprises

The latest Gartner figures show few surprises in terms of smartphone industry trends, but they will still be of interest to those who want to know what the next big thing will be.

  • Android up from 9.6% to 36% market share
  • Symbian down from 44.2% to 27.4% market share
  • iOS up from 15.3% to 16.8% market share
  • BlackBerry down from 19.7% to 12.9%

Microsoft has dropped from 6.8% to 3.6% (Windows Mobile to Windows Phone transformation) and the others make up a mere 3.3% (down from 4.4% last year.

None of this means a lot because the huge Android jump distorts the other figures greatly. iOS’s modest jump is impressive when Android is considered and RIM’s drop is maybe not a bad as it looks.

iPlayboy for iPad goes live

Playboy is now officially available on the iPad and comes with the ability to download any back issue. It works as a web app over at http://i.playboy.com and looks quite professional.

Personally I find it to be sexist, degrading and unnecessary. Anyone want to sell me an iPad?!?

250,000 Playbooks sold to date

RBC Capital Markets believes that RIM has sold 250,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks to date. Note the word ‘sold’ which means that it is easily beating the Xoom.

From BGR- “RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky believes RIM has sold approximately 250,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to date. In a note to investors on Wednesday, the analyst points to channel checks in stating PlayBook sales have remained steady since the device’s launch on April 19th. If these estimates are accurate, RIM’s PlayBook is handily outselling the XOOM.”

Where is your nearest cell site, and how good is it?

You can now check, in the UK, to see which operators are serving you well with Sitefinder Mobile. Simply input your post code and a map will pop up showing the cell sites that are nearest to you, and clicking on the markers will provide further information about them. I checked mine and 3 have 2 high-powered sites, Vodafone has an average site and Orange has one. No T-Mobile and no O2. All of this explains why 3 is so good for me at home. via The Clove Blog.

iPhone 4 verses Samsung Galaxy S 2

Comparing two phones on two different operating systems is never easy, but if a comparison is to be done these are the two to look at. The iPhone 4 is of course the best iOS smartphone on the market, out of only two, and the Galaxy S 2 is the arguably the best Android smartphone on the. I haven’t used them all, but the pedigree Samsung brings and my experience with the phone suggest it is near the top of the Android pile, if not at the very top.

Apple recently instigated legal proceedings against Samsung based on the premise that the latter has been copying the former in hardware and software design in the mobile space. It is easy to look at this as yet another lawsuit in the mobile industry and to just dismiss it, but the more I use Samsung smartphones the more I see similarities. When I look at these two phones, I see the following-

The large home button on the Galaxy S 2 is sat on its own flanked by two virtual keys that only light up when pressed.

You can take a screenshot on the Galaxy S 2 by holding down the power and home keys.

You can move icons around the home screens by dragging them to a new place and while many operating systems do this, it is hard not to see the similarity in use here.

There are some aspects of what Samsung does with Android that sail very close to the wind in my opinion. The hardware has long been a source of contention, but the software tweaks are sometimes too close to how iOS does things. The addition of the screenshot mechanism in the Galaxy devices, while very welcome, is almost identical to the iOS screenshot method. I’m not sure if these areas are patented, but Samsung could have chosen any number of ways to implement this and they chose one that is the same as iOS.

When Samsung does things differently the results are highly impressive. When it copies others the results are still impressive, but it does feel as if I have seen it all before, which I have of course.

If someone asked me today which smartphone they should buy out of these two, I would almost certainly say to go for the Galaxy. The screen is bigger and better, the camera is better, the phone is lighter and the call quality is much clearer. Battery life between the two is similar and from a hardware perspective the Galaxy is some way ahead. The Retina screen in the iPhone 4 was much touted as being the next big thing, and it is indeed fantastic, but I find myself wanting to use the larger Galaxy screen for films and most other tasks because there is just so much space to play in. Retina is lovely, but high resolution is more than enough for me and it seems as though dimensions are more important than pixels per inch to me.

The software is mightily important when choosing a smartphone and there is little doubt that Android is catching iOS quickly and the birth of Google Movies will be one of the final pieces of the puzzle. I can’t really tell you which is the better phone for you, but I can say that the S 2 is ahead in terms of hardware and that Android is closer to iOS for usability than it has ever been.

On a personal level I am torn between these phones. The Galaxy S 2 is a better phone of that I have no doubt, but like many others I have been enchanted by the reliability, completeness and usability of iOS. A year with one phone is unusual for me and a year in which I have had no real inclination to move is remarkable, but Apple has done a very good job of keeping me within the iOS fold. Many iPhone users will stick with their phones for a long time to come and will enjoy the new found loyalty they have developed to one platform, but new users now have some deep questions to ask themselves. Apple needs to be careful of that because Android is finding itself in a more diverse range of products every month and it could outsell the rest by a massive margin eventually.

So, these are both stunningly good smartphones. When I use the Galaxy S 2 and revert back to the iPhone, the screen feels tiny. When I use the iPhone and revert back to the Galaxy S 2 the interface feels slightly messy in comparison.

It is like comparing apples and oranges and it depends on your taste as to which is right for you. The really good news is that both will do everything you want them to do yet it is amazing that one is almost a year old and still competing with the best the competition can offer.

COTD: Implanted phones

Today’s comment of the day comes from Bob who is looking ‘way’ into the future (I hope)- “I tell you, implanted smartphones are coming. Eventually wired in to your brain so that you get a heads up display and you control it by thinking about what you want to do. Imagine sitting back in your easy chair and doing your e-mail while you drink your coffee and pet the cat in your lap. Or make the image opaque to watch a movie in 3D with picture in picture of the ongoing game so you can keep up with the score. I give it 10 years, 20 at the most. And if you think the display will be distracting, you’ll be able to turn it off, and your children will have the implant early in life so they get used to it very quickly.”
