Smartphones without Internet Access

A week or so ago I spent a week in France and never turned on roaming data as I’m terrified of getting a large bill on my iPhone. I noticed how little I used the device and this got me thinking to how much we rely on mobile data access for our smartphones.

Just looking at my first two homepage 15 out of the 32 rely upon the internet to function. The others are mostly the built in functions (phone, messages, settings etc). So when I’m travelling in Europe my iPhone almost becomes a PDA.

I have more pan-European trips coming up and know my iPhone will fall towards the bottom of my bag! This makes me miss the USA where despite patchy coverage, at least you can drive more than few hours and still have data.

Why can’t the mobile operators treat the United States of Europe the same as they treat the United States of America?

Blackberry Bold 9700 First Impressions: 3G

Okay so I’ve now had my my Blackberry Bold 9700 for 3 days. I’m going to jot down a note every day or so with little things that surprise me both good and bad. This isn’t really meant as a review but as a “thoughts” article.

Wow! I get 3G just about everywhere.

With my iPhone 3G I’m pretty much limited to GPRS and sometimes Edge with very little exposure to 3G. Turning on the Bold 9700 was amazing. 3G is everywhere.

Now this isn’t yet a real test. The Bold9700 is on Vodafone and the iPhone is on O2 so there are two variables here. I’m a scientist and so I must exclude a variable and so a SIM swap is in my immediate future. Is the 3G availability down to Vodafone or the Bold? I’ll do this test over the coming days but any comments are welcome!

Mobile Productivity: Ready To Scream!!!!

I love my smartphones for Mobile Productivity but have just had a couple of software glitches that make me want to scream really really loudly. This post is something of a request to you for a new better practice and also a chance for those who are already really productive to show off.

There are several popular productivity systems and much software to enable you to work remotely from your PC. Has anyone stumbled upon the perfect match of productivity system and mobile companion that allows you to keep working wherever you are and to keep everything in sync.

Any great systems would I’m sure be useful for many.

iPhone OS 4.0 Wants and Expectations

Tomorrow Apple are announcing the details of the new OS 4.0.
There’s quite a bit of rumour out there about the possible changes. What do you think will happen and what would you like to see. Let’s see who can be the most accurate.

    I expect to hear about

Multitasking
HighDef Screen Support
Support for 64GB storage

When the new hardware is announced I expect more goodies but for now I think MultiTasking is going to be the keynote.

How about you?

QOTD: Do we / Should we settle for software stability?

improvementWe all like to do several things with our smartphones and this differs from person to person. But once we find a solution that works for us do we continue to look for a better solution? Should we?

Is there a better GPS solution / Twitter client / etc than we currently have? How do we know we have the best solution?

For my part I know that once I have something I don’t really look for an alternative until I find a need my current system doesn’t satisfy. For example I use Documents To Go and like it but I’ve never even tried QuickOfiice. Perhaps I’m missing a serious trick here?
