Microsoft Courier on the iPad: it could happen

Remember Microsoft Courier (video link here)? The idea was a leap up from what we can do now on tablets, but sadly it didn’t reach reality. Well, a duo of developers is looking to bring the dream to the iPad and has already raised their target amount of $10,000 to get development underway.

You can see more details of Taposé here or, even better, check out the demo video below-

The iPad was predicted back in 1994

Take a look at the video below from Knight-Ridder. It was produced all the way back in 1994 and features an idea of the future of newspapers. It is remarkable how close to the iPad their premonition was, apart from the stylus of course. via TUAW.

Today’s news: Apple comes clean, Nokia cleans out…

Nokia has issued a press release detailing its plans for Symbian in the near future and the restructuring of its workforce. “Earlier today, Nokia announced plans to form a strategic collaboration with Accenture that would result in the transfer of Nokia’s Symbian software activites, including about 3,000 employees to Accenture. In addition, Nokia also plans to reduce its global workforce by about 4,000 employees by the end of 2012, with the majority of reductions in Denmark, Finland and the UK. In accordance with country-by-country legal requirements, discussions with employee representatives started today.”

To me this offers the final nail in the coffin for Symbian- without Nokia, it really isn’t even worth considering now. It is a real shame for the 4,000 who will lose their jobs, but I guess we could all see it coming.

Apple has come clean on the iOS location tracking issue by posting a Q&A on the subject- “Sometime in the next few weeks Apple will release a free iOS software update that:

  • reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
  • ceases backing up this cache, and
  • deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.”

RIM has acquired Tungle which will potentially offer the ability to share calendar data over different platforms on PIM hardware. That would be more than useful on the PlayBook… “This is exciting for you too as we expect the Tungle service to only get better. Our plan today is what it has always been – for Tungle to become integrated with your daily activities and be ubiquitous within the applications you’re already using. When you think scheduling, Tungle should be at your fingertips.”

App of the day: SplitApple

SplitApple is one of many archery games for iOS, but few are as beautifully presented or as fun to play. It is one of those simplistic titles that keeps you coming back for more and there is a promise of many more features in the near future. These new features would be welcome because it is a bit of a one trick pony currently, but the potential is huge.

“SplitApple is a fun archer game, the perfect mix of arcade and simulation. With beautiful and running smooth graphics, the game reproduces the feelings of archery.
Use your skills and accuracy to reach the bull’s eye. Aim right, adjust your shot power and pay attention to the wind and gravity.

Reach the highest score in the tournament and time trial modes. Take risks and aim for apples up in the trees to perform a “SplitApple”. You might lose a shot but you can win a big reward if you get it right!”

EA having another iOS and Android sale

EA is holding yet another sale on its iOS titles and this time there are serious bargains to be had. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 and Dead Space are huge bargains at just £0.59 / $0.99 each. Many EA Android titles are also on sale. Fill your boots!

The main problem is that people like me never buy EA titles at full price anymore because we know that a sale is always just around the corner.

My first Apple Store experience: welcome to planet pretentious

It has taken me a long time to visit an Apple Store. Despite my involvement in the industry for a few years now and a more recent conversion to iOS for my smartphone needs and Mac OS for my desktop requirements, I had looked at the Apple Store experience from afar and presumed that it would be as good as everyone says it is.

The opportunity to visit the Apple Store in Regent Street came up today and my son and I knew this would be one of the highlights of our family day out to London. My wife and daughter were not so keen, but knew what it meant to us so gave us an hour to have a look around while they did girlie things and looked in shops where only females understand why the prices are so high.

So, we walked in and prepared to experience the Apple magic. The products were spaced out to a degree that made a mockery of the floor space available; gleaming silver products that commanded attention from the hoards thronging through the store. Apple employees in pale blue T-shirts sauntered around with just a hint of smugness mixed with a look of regret that suggested they wanted to be badged an ‘Apple Genius’, but had so far not made the grade. The store was as clean as a hospital (I do mean clean, not MRSA dirty) and everything had been created to enhance the shopping experience and create an atmosphere that made the customer feel part of a special crowd.

It was the crowd that bothered me.

Despite all of the wonderful products, clever retail floor design and helpful employees, at no point did I feel part of the Apple crowd. My BHS shirt, Tesco jeans and All Stars trainers looked out of placed in a sea of designer clothing, thick rimmed glasses and hair that had been styled to the point that it would not move. I generalise here, but the crowd in the store felt like the kind of people I usually do not associate with. They are not deep enough, they worry too much about how they look and what others think of them. They are dull and prefer to be led rather than lead.

I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when she visited Rodeo Drive the first time although to be fair I don’t think anyone thought I was a female prostitute. I just felt out of place; I wasn’t going to spend £254 on a pair of not very good headphones, I wasn’t going to sit while a man presented to a huge crowd of people how to insert an image in Pages and I just wanted to leave as quick as I could.

It’s rare that I feel out of place anywhere and even when the snotty, but quite attractive, sales assistant in Harrods asked me not to touch the Vertu mobile phone that I was never going to pay £6,500 for I didn’t feel as distanced as I did in the Apple Store.

The Apple Store was like Stepford Wives, but with Stepford customers trying to live a dream Apple has created for them and Stepford employees who dare not put a foot out of place. I realise that this store is in a very wealthy part of London, but couldn’t shake the feeling that, despite owning and appreciating some Apple products, I am not what Apple would call an ‘Apple Person’. And I am grateful that I never will be.

And even if I am not an Apple person, at least Apple knows exactly where I am

Apple, the Chinese and us

“Well, do you see that group of people outside? They’re already here waiting for tomorrow’s shipment of iPads.”

That is a quote from NYT in a story detailing the ongoing problem of Chinese re-sellers buying up all of the iPads before traditional buyers can get hold of one. It is a continuing problem and one that many feel Apple should fix.

There are plus and minuses for Apple-

Apple makes a profit on each iPad it sells

This activity generates demand and thus publicity

The overall number of iPads sold is higher

But…

The users of these iPads are much less likely to buy apps and media

Some are no doubt being exploited by this trade and it may well be funding all sorts of other unsavoury activities

I would suggest reading the entire story and some of the comments because it really is fascinating how this has unraveled. Part of me feels that this is all legitimate in a capitalist society, but then I read the comment below from an NYT reader-

“My wife and I live down the block from the Upper West Side Apple Store, and every day and night, there are groups of Chinese people lined up to buy out the stores daily supply of iPad 2′s as soon as the store opens. They sleep on cardboard and huddle in tents on the sidewalk. I stood in line the first day, and got my iPad 2, and every day that I have walked by the store since, there has been a sign by the front entrance stating that “due to the overwhelming popularity of the iPad 2 we are currently out of stock, please check back again later.” What must be so exasperating for the Apple store employees is that everyday they must turn away legitimate customers because their inventory has been depleted by these grey market profiteers. What is so sketchy about this is how the buyers are so tightly organized. I’ve noticed is that there tends to be one man there who operates as the “boss” and gives cash to the other people in line. They go into the store buy the two iPad 2′s that they are allowed, come back out, give the iPad 2s to the “boss” who gives them more cash to get back into line. They repeat the process, until the “boss” has collected the stores entire stock. This is not a group of independent people individually re-selling their iPad 2′s on the black market, but an organized effort to make a profit for the “boss”. I am assuming that the “boss”‘s workers are being compensated in some fashion, but the impression that I get is that many of the “workers” have just arrived in the country, and don’t speak much english, and are being put to work in this grey market iPad 2 trade. It’s hard to watch this process and not think that these “workers” are being taken advantage of by the “boss” in some manner. It’s shocking to me that Apple has yet to address the profiteering happening every morning directly outside their store. This same sort of behavior happened after the release of the iPad 1 last year. At one point last year, the iPad buyers were getting increasingly bold and actually started harrasing my wife as she came home from work late at night. The next day I went to the Upper West Side Apple Store and spoke to the store’s manager. He gave me some corporate double speak, and said they were looking into the problem, but nothing ever really changed. The only thing that eventually put a stop to it, was the release of the iPad 2 in China. Until that happens, unfortunately I am assuming this unfortunate behavior will continue, and legitimate non-profit seeking Apple customers will be denied an opportunity to purchase this great device.I love having an Apple Store in the neighborhood, but when this sort of grey market behavior starts to define the character of that corporation, I would rather they take the store elsewhere.”

iPad 247 probs

Anyone else having problems viewing 247 on the iPad? Arnold explains his here- “First and foremost, thanks for the years of dedication to the site. It starts my day. I am having problems reading it in Safari on my iPad. The page loads. The control header us there, but the content doesn’t display.

I tap on the screen, rotate the iPad, swipe the screen and maybe the content appears – but forget about tapping on a link, because when I come back – the same calisthenics.

Don’t know how to explain it better. Hope it helps.”

Mobile digital Moleskines

I am a huge fan of Moleskine notebooks and have used one everyday for the past 5 years. The company has now entered the iOS market and released an official app that is designed to offer a similar experience on the iPhone / iPad. It’s free and not too bad, but not a sure fire winner yet.

“The official Moleskine App for iPhone and iPad allows you to express your creativity through text, images and sketches. Pick a classic Moleskine notebook paper style, create a new thought and start to type or draw choosing amongst different colors and sizes. Once you are done with your thought, you can store it on your device and make edits whenever you want.

Don’t forget to map your thought by adding a geo-tag and share it with your friends via the most popular social networks or email.”

The iPad blogger gets closer

Blogsy for iPad is attempting to make blogging much easier on the iPad. It still isn’t there yet, but with development could make the iPad a more suitable tool for this task. Thanks to Trevor.

“Blogsy is a tool designed specifically to take full advantage of the iPad’s unique touch functionality. Adding your photos and videos is as easy as dragging them from the media sidebar and dropping them into your blog post. This makes writing blog posts as easy as it should be, saving you from the hassle of manually copy/pasting embed codes or links.”
