RIM: Why is it that people don’t appreciate our profits?
Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of RIM, asked a pertinent question in an interview last week- “Why is it that people don’t appreciate our profits?”
He has a point. The results continue to head upwards, but analyst after analyst (don’t you just hate them all) continue to forecast doom for the Canadian company that until recently could do no wrong. Yes, there are some worrying signs, but the folks at RIM are no mugs and it seems to me as if some ‘want’ RIM to struggle and are thus forcing the issue.

The BlackBerry PlayBook: the best of the rest?
RIM is pushing the PlayBook pretty hard these days with a series of features highlighted that take the bravado straight to the competition. Here are some quotes from this page-
“Web without limits: Ideal for games, media, apps and everything the real Internet offers Full Adobe® Flash® 10.1 enabled, Built-in support for HTML 5, No-compromise rendering of text, graphics and video and 1.6 Million Flash sites and climbing.”
“Amplified BlackBerry experience: Wirelessly connect to your BlackBerry® smartphone1 for real time access to: Email, calendar, address book, task list and BBM™.”
“Powerful, user-friendly QNX technology: It’s what the World Wide Web runs on. Multi-processing for true multitasking. Proven mission critical reliability.”
It is very good marketing and I kind of like the ‘web without limits’ dig because I am one of those people who is on the Adobe side when it comes to Flash. All in all, the PlayBook is shaping up to be the best of the rest in the tablet market and the only one that looks as good as the iPad on paper, if not better. The proof will be in the using though…

BlackBerry Messenger without a BlackBerry is just another messenger
BlackBerry Messenger, the beautiful BlackBerry Messenger, is headed to Android, iOS and who know what else in the not too distant future and this initially had me excited. And then I realised what made BlackBerry Messenger so good.
The software speed and ease of use are of course important, but no way near as important as the smartphone the messenger is running on. I tried using Messenger on a Storm and it felt like just another instant messenger. I tried alternative messengers on a BlackBerry Bold for an off site article and most of them felt great.
There is something about the marriage of BlackBerry Messenger and a BlackBerry smartphone that works almost perfectly, a marriage that cannot be recreated on an iPhone or touch screen Android smartphone. RIM is giving away one of its golden eggs and potentially throwing out the perception that it is just another messenger. Bad move.

BlackBerry Touch outed. RIM has been rummaging again…
RIM has been rummaging around in its box of spare smartphone parts and come up with yet another smartphone that looks almost identical to the previous one. The BlackBerry Touch has been spotted by BGR and will be running OS 6.1 and using a BlackBerry ID instead of a PIN for cloud backups etc.

Interview with Patrick Hankinson (Wakeful)
Today we have an interview with Patrick Hankinson who is the CEO of the company behind Wakeful. If you do not know what Wakeful is and have a BlackBerry, it’s time you did.
1) How did the idea for Wakeful come about and what has the response been like so far?
The application came about from waking up to an annoying alarm clock every single morning, then turning on the tv and grabbing the laptop to see what the latest news was and what the weather is like (how should I dress for the day). I was looking for an application that could sort of combine that morning routine right on an alarm clock. Making it work directly on the BlackBerry seemed to be the obvious choice. The uptake so far has been amazing with almost 1,000 beta testers within our first week.
2) How many people are involved in the project and can you offer an estimate on the number of hours involves in creating an app like this?
Currently, there are three of us. Only one of the developers is working on the application full time. The rest of us are researching the best way to bring this to market. From the core idea to first commercialization will take about a full two months of our time.
3) Why did you decide to choose the BlackBerry platform first and do you have plans to support other platforms in the future?
BlackBerry seems like the natural choice for me because I carry one around all the time and always use it as my alarm clock. Our team also has extensive experience developing and marketing BlackBerry applications. Yes, our next steps are to bring the product to iPhone & Android.
My current role is CEO, but in our small start-up we change hats a lot. One day I could be managing the company making sure things are on track and things are moving forward, not backwards. Some days I’m deep into code.
5) What smartphone do you use, if any, and why?
Currently using the BlackBerry Bold 9780. I love OS6. The ability to type what I want and get there without having to scroll through applications, contacts and other icons is golden. Definitely has increased my productivity.
6) Do you have plans for other apps in the future?
We have tons of ideas of apps. It’s really about evaluating the ability to bring the idea to market and not to get buried in all the noise.
7) Anything you would like to add?
I hope more developers start looking at creating unique apps, instead of the copy-cat approach…

LiveProfile for Android, iOS and BlackBerry
LiveProfile is yet another in a long line of instant messaging apps designed to work over multiple mobile platforms. So far, it works quite well and is the nearest I have found to offering the simplicity and speed of BlackBerry Messaging.
“LiveProfile for BlackBerry is now officially launched! If you haven’t already head over to http://liveprofile.com/get from your mobile device and download it. LiveProfile finally unites users of Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone smartphones to provide a blazing fast, featured packed, and completely free mobile messenger for all to use.
This is a public beta release so there are some known issues. BB OS 6.0 users are unable to set profile pictures or crop, outgoing file transfers are not yet implemented, and a few other minor bugs. Please bear with us and understand we will be here working day and night to fix any issues that might arise.”

The latest Android tablet: the BlackBerry PlayBook
RIM has finally confirmed what we have known for a while. The BlackBerry PlayBook will run Android apps.
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – March 24, 2011) – Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry® PlayBookTM tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.
RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java® apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.
In addition, RIM will shortly release the native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook enabling C/C++ application development on the BlackBerry® Tablet OS. For game-specific developers, RIM is also announcing that it has gained support from two leading game development tooling companies, allowing developers to use the cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to bring their games to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Zeus Trogan infects BlackBerry’s via SMS
Following the news of malware hidden in a selection of Android apps, we now have the announcment that the Zeus Trogan is infecting some BlackBerry devices. The short answer to avoiding this appears to be not installing any software via SMS.
“A Zeus Trojan designed specifically to run on the Blackberry operating system has been detected by researchers at Trend Micro.
The malware allows remote access of infected Blackberry devices by the attacker, who can then change the SMS message default number, add a new device administrator, control blocked call lists, and even turn the device on and off.
The Trojan also removes itself from the list of installed applications to avoid scanning and detection by antivirus software.”

T-Mobile lets out BlackBerry OS6 for the Bold 9700
BlackBerry OS6 should not be available for Bold 9700 users (via BGR) which makes for a compelling combination. I believe that the 9700 is the best BlackBerry yet and using OS6 without a touch screen actually work better than with one. If you are on T-Mobile and have a 9700 it is time to connect to your desktop and enjoy the upgrade.
