Death Rally: game of the week
Death Rally is likely the game release of the week on iOS and offers a lot for the money. It is universal and ideal for those of you who have a fetish for top-down racers. I certainly do.

No new iPhone for a while- so relieved!
The news (rumour) that the next iPhone will be delayed is great news for me. The past 6 months have been the first in years when I haven’t felt the need to upgrade my phone / PDA in the vain search for a better experience.
I am happy with the iPhone 4 and can’t see how Apple can significantly improve it at this time and the delay could be a very, very positive thing. There are many possibilities here of which the following come to mind-
Apple is trying to create the original iPhone impact again with a new phone that pushes the limits of what we can imagine and needs time to do this, possibly into 2012.
Apple is being stretched with work on the iPad, updating Mac OS and everything else it is trying to do. It may seem unlikely to delay the new iPhone, which some consider to be the company’s flagship product, but maybe Apple is banking on the competition failing to come up with anything that can beat it in the next few months. Probably not a bad bet.
Does Steve Jobs need more time to recover his health? This delay could fit with what the Doctors are telling him, but this is speculation at best.
Is the whole delay rumour a smokescreen? Apple was burnt with the stolen iPhone 4 prototype last year and does not want that to happen again. Just maybe a new iPhone will appear at WWDC after all.
I am still hoping there is a delay which goes against the way the mobile industry is supposed to work, but I am content at this time. A highly unusual feeling for me and I want to enjoy it for a little longer.
Interview with Patrick Hankinson (Wakeful)
Today we have an interview with Patrick Hankinson who is the CEO of the company behind Wakeful. If you do not know what Wakeful is and have a BlackBerry, it’s time you did.
1) How did the idea for Wakeful come about and what has the response been like so far?
The application came about from waking up to an annoying alarm clock every single morning, then turning on the tv and grabbing the laptop to see what the latest news was and what the weather is like (how should I dress for the day). I was looking for an application that could sort of combine that morning routine right on an alarm clock. Making it work directly on the BlackBerry seemed to be the obvious choice. The uptake so far has been amazing with almost 1,000 beta testers within our first week.
2) How many people are involved in the project and can you offer an estimate on the number of hours involves in creating an app like this?
Currently, there are three of us. Only one of the developers is working on the application full time. The rest of us are researching the best way to bring this to market. From the core idea to first commercialization will take about a full two months of our time.
3) Why did you decide to choose the BlackBerry platform first and do you have plans to support other platforms in the future?
BlackBerry seems like the natural choice for me because I carry one around all the time and always use it as my alarm clock. Our team also has extensive experience developing and marketing BlackBerry applications. Yes, our next steps are to bring the product to iPhone & Android.
My current role is CEO, but in our small start-up we change hats a lot. One day I could be managing the company making sure things are on track and things are moving forward, not backwards. Some days I’m deep into code.
5) What smartphone do you use, if any, and why?
Currently using the BlackBerry Bold 9780. I love OS6. The ability to type what I want and get there without having to scroll through applications, contacts and other icons is golden. Definitely has increased my productivity.
6) Do you have plans for other apps in the future?
We have tons of ideas of apps. It’s really about evaluating the ability to bring the idea to market and not to get buried in all the noise.
7) Anything you would like to add?
I hope more developers start looking at creating unique apps, instead of the copy-cat approach…

Tennis Tour for iOS: the ZX all over again
Tennis Tour for the iPhone is a game that is not only great fun to play, but one which brought back many memories of my early teenage years stuck in a bedroom desperately trying to win at Match Point on the ZX Spectrum.
It is a clever mix of retro and new and the more you play, the more you will play… Great value at under $1.
While looking for an image for this article, I found this great piece on the Spectrum- well worth a read if you used to use one.

MobileMe to drop to $20 with Music Locker included?
The big rumour of the moment is that Apple will drop the annual cost of MobileMe to $20 and bundle in the Music Locker service. It is unclear if the Music Locker service will be $20 and MobileMe free, but most seem to believe that they will be bundled for $20. Is that a price at which you would use the above services?
From The Music Void- “Informed sources say that Apple has sealed its deal with Warner and has been using that agreement to leverage the other labels to get the deals done in time for the April launch. The locker service will reportedly have somewhere around a $20 annual price tag.”

QuickCal Mobile: the quickest iOS calendar?
QuickCal Mobile could well be the solution you are looking for if you want super quick calendar entry above all else. It seems to have some problems with Google calendars, but I may take a look if it is as fact to input appointments as a BlackBerry is. Thanks to Trevor ‘the hit man’.
Create calendar events using natural language in SECONDS, and seamlessly sync those events to your phone’s calendars! (Exchange, Google, iCal, whatever!)
(Also check out “QuickCal” on the Mac App Store for this functionality – and a LOT more – on your desktop!)
You’ll be amazed how much quicker you can create events than using any other calendar app (native or otherwise). Nothing is faster than typing what you want!

LiveProfile for Android, iOS and BlackBerry
LiveProfile is yet another in a long line of instant messaging apps designed to work over multiple mobile platforms. So far, it works quite well and is the nearest I have found to offering the simplicity and speed of BlackBerry Messaging.
“LiveProfile for BlackBerry is now officially launched! If you haven’t already head over to http://liveprofile.com/get from your mobile device and download it. LiveProfile finally unites users of Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone smartphones to provide a blazing fast, featured packed, and completely free mobile messenger for all to use.
This is a public beta release so there are some known issues. BB OS 6.0 users are unable to set profile pictures or crop, outgoing file transfers are not yet implemented, and a few other minor bugs. Please bear with us and understand we will be here working day and night to fix any issues that might arise.”

Counting On You: lazyboy turns bad
You may well know lazyboy from the comments he makes on PDA-247. Well, now is your chance to get to know him a little better. His son has written and directed a short film which was recorded on only an iPhone 4 and lazyboy (Trevor) is one of the actors. He is the nasty bloke arranging the hit- if only I knew what he was really like…
Seriously, it’s a brilliant short film and it is embedded below for you to enjoy as well. I present Counting On You-
Compositions: compose, drop in the box, jump between iOS devices
Compositions is potentially brilliant. It lets you compose documents on any iOS or Mac OS device and immediately jump between devices to continue editing, and all backed up by Dropbox. It is well priced too.
Compositions is a new Dropbox(c) enabled text editor for iOS and Mac OS X. It’s designed to keep you focused on content creation, rather than interface chrome. And since it’s backed by Dropbox(c), your documents can stay in sync across all your devices.

Exodus International removed from App Store
Check out the latest tweet from Alan Chambers- “It’s official, the @ExodusInl App is no longer in the @AppStore. Incredibly disappointing. Watch out, it could happen to you. #freedom.”

We has an intelligent debate on the subject of the Exodus International app on 247 last week and it now seems as though Apple has seen fit to remove it once and for all. Cult of Mac spotted the removal and I don’t expect to see it again anytime soon.
As much as I detest the app and what it stands for, something about its removal still makes me feel uneasy.
iDry Waterproof Case Review
I now know how important it is to protect an expensive smartphone, and that is during a normal day without strenuous activity. The fact is that smartphones can break or they can be useless in certain situations because they are not designed to cope with water and the knocks that are likely to occur during some activities.
The iDry Waterproof Case is here to help and will suit those of you who have a need to use such a case in the rain or even underwater. The target market for a case like this is huge; golfers, scuba divers (remember that it has a claimed 5 metre depth rating), and anyone else who wants to take their iPhone with them when the weather could potentially turn bad. It is designed for use in extreme or unusual conditions and obviously not to be carried around every day.
The fact that you can use the iPhone in the case is a huge advantage and the screen cover is cleverly designed to allow swiping, tapping and even typing while remaining perfectly waterproof at all times. Compromise is present of course, but with time you start to realise that gentle swipes work and that pushing too hard will ripple the screen protection which is thick silicone.
Opening and closing the case is an unusual, but reassuring experience. You twist the top and everything locks into place firmly which offers a sense that the case really will protect the iPhone no matter what you are doing. I haven’t seen a case that looks and feels so secure, but the size increase is of course evident. There is no way on earth that a case can offer top class protection without increasing the overall size of the unit and this one does, but it is very light and this makes carrying it during some activities much less noticeable than you may otherwise expect.
This case is quoted as fitting the iPhone iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 and it certainly does, but for the iPhone 4 I found it fitted better with a silicone case in place. There is a very slight rattle when it is in bare so some support would be useful.
A neck strap is included for added protection and all in all I am very pleased with the product. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this case is the price which comes in at only £9.99. When you consider the cost of such cases elsewhere, this price is extremely low and in my view it offers much more protection than you would expect at this price. Highly recommended for those that need serious protection during specific activities.
Available from holdersandmounts for £9.99.
