QOTD: PIM?

Have you found your ideal mobile / desktop PIM setup? Also, what do you use to keep organised? I am using Week Calendar on the iPhone synchronised with Google Calendar. Google Contacts are also used alongside an IMAP email account. I also use Evernote and Awesome Note for the bits and pieces that come in handy all of the time.

QOTD: Cameras?

How many cameras do you own and do you use a different one for different occasions? I tend to use my iPhone 4 camera for everything these days, but my son uses his Digital SLR when it is safe to take it out. He also has a compact camera which is handy sometimes.

QOTD: What’s next?

What smartphone is next for you? There are countless new devices headed our way over the next 6 months and it would be good to know which one is most likely to be your new best friend. It was going to be the iPhone 5 (4S), but something else may well have jumped in front of it.

QOTD: Screens and eyes?

Do you struggle at all with smartphone screens and the amount of information they can hold? I’m OK with my phone, but know a few people who say that they can’t use smartphones because their eyes are not good enough to read everything without straining.

QOTD: Back in the day?

Back in the golden age of computing (1980 / 1990′s?) there were many flame wars over which was the best computer, but somehow they were more friendly than they tend to be today.

So, what was your favourite computer of the 1980 / 1990′s? For me it was definitely the Atari STE and it probably always will be. I don’t like people who owned Amigas (just kidding:)) Retro flame time!

QOTD: Mobile knowledge?

How would you rate yourself in terms of knowledge of smartphones, the mobile industry and all other things mobile? Me- excellent in all three of course plus an in-depth knowledge of mobile networks and fixed telecoms. I am modest as well…

QOTD: Landlines?

How many times would you say you use your landline every month? I think ours get used about 5 times a month with three of those calls being callers trying to sell stuff.

QOTD: Contracts?

How much do you pay for your mobile service every month? In a recent FaceTime call with Tom I was shocked at how much mobile access is in the US compared to the UK. I pay £15 / month for 300 voice minutes, 3000 texts and genuine unlimited data.

I realise that there are justifiable differences between the US market and smaller countries like the UK, but it seems to me as if some of you have to pay luxury prices for what others see as a utility.

QOTD: Leaving it at home?

How often do you go out and not have your smartphone with you? Me, never.

QOTD: Closed or open mobile operating systems?

Do you prefer closed or open mobile operating systems? There have been countless discussions concerning the over-closed nature of iOS and the wonder of Android openness, but it now seems as though there is only one choice- closed. Every major operating system is owned by the company that makes the hardware for it (iOS = Apple, BlackBerry = RIM, Symbian = Nokia) and those that are not are close to similar outcomes. Microsoft will no doubt favour Nokia for Windows Phone development and who knows where Google will end up. The Android manufacturers need Android, they really do, and it looks as though Android could end up as closed as the rest.

QOTD: Are you a Windows or a Mac person?

Slightly off-topic question today, but sure to bring up some debate. Are you a Windows or a Mac person, or both? I am a Mac person at home and can’t see myself going back to Windows as my main operating system. Although my work laptop and netbook both run Windows 7.

Sorry, forgot Linux. Do you run Linux?

QOTD: One moment?

What one mobile moment sticks in your mind above all others? To me it is obviously the original iPhone announcement, which I guess it will be for a lot of you, and the launch of the Psion 5- incredible at the time. OK, that is two moments, but it’s my site so I’m allowed:)

QOTD: Smartphones and cars?

Is your smartphone connected to your car and do you use it for entertainment or more serious stuff when driving? My iPhone 4 is used for GPS and transmitting music to my car radio and that’s about it. Do you use yours more inventively?

QOTD: Communication?

If you consider ‘all’ of the various types of communication available to you today, which do you use the most? Social networks, instant messaging, text messaging, MMS, voice, VOIP, email and the list goes on and on. I would say that email is still the most used for me.

QOTD: Battery percentages?

At what point do you start to feel uneasy about the battery level on your smartphone? I must admit that when I am below 50% I have an unnatural urge to recharge it.
