OLPC unveils slimline tablet PC
The XO-3 has been revealed by the group behind the $100 laptop. All we have is a design at the moment, but it looks very neat. From the BBC- “The group behind the $100 laptop has revealed the design for its latest computer aimed at connecting children in the developing world.
The XO-3, as it is known, is a slim-line touchscreen tablet PC.
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) said it would be “available in 2012″ and would cost “well below $100″.
The new design replaces the proposed XO-2, a foldable e-book that was first shown off in 2008 but has since been scrapped by the organisation.
The XO-3 will eventually replace the original XO laptop that first went into production in 2007.
The innovative machines, which have been designed for use in remote and harsh environments, were designed for use by school children and featured a sunlight readable display and open source software.”

Nokia Booklet 3G review – part 1, design and hardware
AAS has posted Nokia Booklet 3G review – part 1, design and hardware which is the start of a detailed look at this much hyped netbook style device. I must say that I really do like what I see so far.
“The Nokia Booklet 3G is a ‘mini-laptop’, running Windows 7, which was announced in August this year and was first showcased at Nokia World in Stuttgart. As such, it is something of a departure from Nokia’s usual phone territory. However it is, perhaps, not so much an odd-man-out in Nokia’s overall strategy as a first glance might suggest. Nokia, with its goal of connecting every person on the planet(!), is always looking to serve its customers in new areas by broadening its product portfolio when opportunities arise.
Some may raise their eyebrows at the choice of Windows 7, but really this isn’t even a choice – commercial realities dictate the use of the Microsoft platform. Laptops with embedded 3G (WWAN) radios have become quite common over the last few years and given Nokia’s expertise in cellular radios and logistical strengths it’s not really that surprising to see Nokia operating in this area. So what’s Nokia’s first product entry in this space like? Read on to find out more!”

All-day mobility comes to the U.S. with Nokia Booklet 3G for AT&T
Just in from Nokia- “New York, NY, USA – Drawing upon its rich heritage and leadership in the mobile industry, Nokia is opening a new chapter in mobility with the introduction of the Nokia Booklet 3G to the U.S. together with AT&T, Best Buy and Microsoft. Developed for connectivity just about anytime and virtually anywhere, the Nokia Booklet 3G is refining what consumers can expect at the crossroads of mobility and the personal computer.
“Nokia understands mobility like no other company and recognizes that the most ‘powerful’ device is the one that doesn’t have you running for the power plug or network point,” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, president and CEO of Nokia. “By combining the Booklet’s sleek design, impressive features and competitive price together with the new Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft, AT&T’s nationwide 3G coverage and Best Buy’s unmatched national retail footprint, we believe we have a winning combination for U.S. consumers.”
“Our alliance with Nokia is advancing on multiple fronts and the Nokia Booklet 3G is an important step,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “We are excited with Nokia’s decision to launch its first PC with Windows 7. By combining the value and simplicity of the operating system with the all-day mobility of the Nokia Booklet 3G, we are bringing new and valuable experiences to consumers and businesses.”
The Nokia Booklet 3G will be sold at all Best Buy locations nationwide as well as at the more than 50 Best Buy Mobile standalone stores across the country. The Nokia Booklet 3G will be offered at an introductory price of 299.99 USD with an AT&T Data Connect plan two-year activation. The Nokia Booklet 3G should arrive in stores by mid-November, and Best Buy expects to begin taking orders online and in stores on October 22 for consumers who want to be among the first in the world to own the Nokia Booklet 3G.
“The Nokia Booklet 3G is a really sharp, exciting device and we look forward to powering it with the nation’s fastest 3G network,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Consumers and small business customers can’t get enough mobile broadband. Nokia’s mobile device leadership, together with AT&T’s mobile broadband network leadership, Best Buy’s retail reach and Windows 7, is a very strong line-up to drive this fast-growing market.”
“Our customers are looking for ways to stay connected no matter where they are and we’re finding that netbooks and laptops are important companion devices next to the smartphone. The addition of the Nokia Booklet 3G to our stores will only serve to amplify consumer interest in this emerging mobile technology,” said Brian J. Dunn, CEO of Best Buy. “As the exclusive retailer through the holidays, Best Buy is uniquely positioned to offer this great product to consumers and ensure they have the knowledge, supporting products and services to use it the minute they leave our stores.”
Best Buy associates will offer Walk Out Working on the Nokia Booklet 3G, as they do for all smartphones. The free service will help customers activate the device, walk through the Windows 7 operating system and make sure customers understand all of the extras including Ovi Suite, the Ovi Maps gadget, and features like Bluetooth connectivity.”

Rolltop: you want this, I know you do
JK just posted an article about a concept notebook called the Rolltop. Watch the video below and let us know what you think. I think I could live with this idea…
Redfly turns your BlackBerry into a Netbook… almost
Redfly has demoed a new smartphone companion which works with BlackBerry smartphones. It adds no extra features, but rather expands the normal BlackBerry screen and while it certainly looks appealing, it costs roughly the same as a standard Netbook.
From Gizmodo- “Turns out the Redfly, that netbook-looking device that extends a smartphone to its 8.9-inch display, is doing all right. So all right that the company rolled out support for BlackBerry. I still would rather get a netbook.
The $250 Redfly hardware is the same — it has a 8.9-inch screen, a pretty cramped keyboard compared to the 10-inch netbooks of today and a decent sized touchpad. I took issue with the touchpad, however. When it is paired with a Windows Mobile phone it works as a mouse, but with the BlackBerry it works as a four way directional pad of sorts. It is supposed to mimic the rollerball on the Berry, but it doesn’t really.
Navigating the BlackBerry OS was a bit sluggish. It took at least two to three seconds to switch windows or tasks (though apparently the drivers aren’t final). The lag is killer when playing BrickBreaker. If I’m going to carry around a notebook looking device in my bag, I’d much rather a $300 netbook with browsing and performance. But the Redfly isn’t popular with people like me. It is primarily an enterprise solution for companies that would rather deploy smartphones than laptops. In that niche case, I assume this BlackBerry solution will be welcomed with open arms.”

Google Chrome OS on the way
Google has announced that it is working on Google Chrome OS which is aimed squarely at Netbooks- “It’s been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work…”
News round-up: 25th May 2009
A leaked business presentation has thrown up some new details about the Palm Pre, such as a 5 hour talk-time. This does seem quite long, but it’s in black and white and goes against Apples theory of multi-tasking reducing battery life… A large selection of N97 photo and video samples have been posted at The Symbian Blog and it is safe to say that the results are more than impressive, especially the video quality. It looks as though 4 new BlackBerry devices are heading to AT&T this year. The Magnum, Onyx, Pearl 3G, and Gemini are all different enough, just, to grab different sectors of the market and RIM is certainly not letting up at the moment.
The Android powered Motorola Heron is also on its way to AT&T this year. The specs are nothing special, but the design is different and it is yet another example of the populatiry of Android among manufacturers. AT&T is also getting the HTC Touch Pro2 and Diamond2 very soon and that’s it for AT&T today. OK, one more AT&T point- the large wireless carrier has managed to let slip another confirmation of the 32GB iPhone through its BlackBerry trade-in program. The option is available to trade one in for a BlackBerry Bold if you so wish, and the last time I look it was still there.
Are the latest crop of Netbooks too big for you? The Umid M1 mBook will be just the thing for you then. With a 4.8″ WVGA touch screen, Windows XP or Linux and 8GB of MicroSD memory, this is the smallest netbook style device yet and will appeal to anyone who likes their computing as small as can be. Finally for now, Apple has now relented and approved the Eucalyptus eBook application which was previously barred for allowing access to the Kama Sutra. This is good news and the constant criticsm of Apple for barring apps is getting tiresome- I do not think this one should have been barred at all, but there is a lot to go through and mistakes will happen. See, I do stand up for Apple now and again…

QOTD: Is Apple value for money?
Microsoft has started churning out adverts which highlight the price difference between laptops running Windows and those from Apple. The adverts tell us nothing we did not know before, but do highlight the price gap which is large if you look at the specifications alone.
Let’s have a bonus question of the day for Sunday. Do you consider Apple laptops and desktops to be value for money and if so, what justifies the extra price compared to similarly specified Windows machines?

The Pocket Yoga: I want it, you must want it!
Gizmodo has published some pictures of the Pocket Yoga which will not see the light of day for a while, but just look at it!
“Granted, this is a decidedly male back pocket and not the ass-hugging skinny jeans of Vaio P ad fame. And it still looks like it’s filling that zone halfway between concept and actual product (as the actual concept sketches that accompany the shots on Lenovo’s Flickr stream would seem to indicate) but it does look cool, with an ultra-widescreen, apparently touchscreen display that may be able to flip around into tablet mode.
Also, look at that crazy belt clasp system. According to one of the Flickr captions, that belt also turns into a mouse. Mind blown.”

USB Portable Blu-Ray + DVD Multi Drive
Now and then an accessory pops up which is just too good to be true, but it’s from Brando so it must be OK. USB Portable Blu-Ray + DVD Multi Drive- “If lack of a Blu-Ray or DVD Drive is the drawback of your PC/Laptop, like the new Asus Eee PC and Macbook Air, you may consider this USB Portable Blu-Ray or DVD Multi Drive. It is compatible with all computers and notebook, as long as they have a USB port and let’s your PC or Laptop.” That is seriously cheap for a Blu-Ray drive!
